Hito all, Thanks for all the help a few posts back on the power trunk release. It Works!!! Anyway, Have a 79 TA with 120k on it, guy at a carshow is willing to sell me an edelbrock intake-cam packeage and never used headers. Car has headers so I am more interested in the cam-intake area. Its the right intake for the shaker also. I've done a few SB Ch@#y motors, this is my first stab at an olds. Do have shop manuel also. Im open for any pointers, or tricks to make this as painless as possibl...Thanks in advance

What is the edelbrock p/n on the box ? That Edelbrock cam is the same one you can get from PAW for 1/2 the cost. The performer intake is the only one that will fit under the hood w/o mods to the air cleaner. Its hardly worth the swap if you are looking for performance gains. I would not waste you time changing cams unless you are planning to address the heads. The heads on the 403 is why the motor only makes 185HP stock. Get some early 67-72 olds 330/350 heads and then do a cam swap. That is how you will make power in this engine. Cheapest way unless you are rebuilding the lower end.

The main thing you need to watch out for on the
Olds V8 when you are changing intakes is that you cannot install the new intake gasket assembly without putting silicone sealer around the water jacket holes on both sides of the gasket. If you don't do this, it will dump antifreeze in your oil in short order. On virtually any other domestic V8 you can install the intake gasket dry as it comes out of the box....Not so with the Oldsmobile. (been there and done that) |

Check ebay..but most will be warped. They all do. Do not use the stock intake metal gasket on an alum intake. Use Mr Gasket Ultraseals. I got mine from www.fcrperformance.com
Brush tack both sides with permatex. Ultra Black silcone along the water ports and along the side rails. Hope that helps. olds |

Bandit,
I have a 79 TA. I rebuilt my motor and got it to running pretty good. As "Olds" said, the 403 motors are weak because of the low compression causd by the heads. To get any worthwile power from that motor you have to get the compression up by miling the heads. If you want that motor to come out of the hole strong, you need to check on your rearend. Because of the gas mileage issues when the cars were new, the 403 cars had a very high speed rear end. Makes good highway driving, but it will embarass you at a light. David |

Thanks for All the info. I scored a new in the box 3711 yesterday at a car show. 7111's will fit but the footnote says the shaker won't work. This 3711 along with my factory Q-Jet will fit just fine. Gotta gather up some fittings and a few pipe plugs and we are ready to go. Should be a Saturday project before it gets too cold here.

Hey Olds, why do you not recommend using the tin tray gasket? Sorry 79 Bandit, don't mean to hijack your post, just wanted to get some advice as well.
Thanks, Ron |

Olds is dead-on correct about not using the turkey tray. Mondell's also agreed. They sell em but dont recommend em. Go with the gasket on each head. Coat the water jacket on BOTH sides with RTV sealer. I bought the permatex that is for water pumps and t-stat housings. Gaskets and new stainless ARP maifold bolts came today. Now if it were daylight at 5 pm when i get home............

Tin gasket + alum intake = warped intake. DO NOT USE THE TIN GASKET ON ALUM INTAKE. It will leak. You may not see it, but once the intake warps you will have loss of vacuum and pull oil up into the intake ports. This is what happened on my intake. I junked it and bought a new one and then used MR GASKET ULTRA SEALS.

Ive used gaskets off a diesel 350. I cant remember exactly what year, but the intake ports match up perfectly. Ill try to find the application, and post a part #.
