I don't know what happened my post disappeared. Anyhow here is a picture of my floor with the outline of the new pan in chalk. My main concern is the front area up bytthe cab mount. Upper left drivers side.

Here is the other pic since I can't get them both to post. Sorry they are so large I can't figure out how to make them smaller.....I figured out how to adjust finally.

Use your camera software to change the resolution and same the file under a new name; that way you keep the original.

George I did do that; these pictures are at half the resolution. My software said reducing the resolution would effect clarity but not the size of the photo. I am at a loss for how to make the pictures post smaller. They are so big it is pain to view them.

Found another software program than I could resize in. So here is the first pick over again. I am really having trouble with the front left corner drivers side up by the cab mount. The ledge up by the kick panel is just about gone so I'm not exactly sure how to tackle it.

rjb, You will probably have to place a patch panel at "ledge up by the kick panel" first to remove the rotted area and then put in your new flooor pan.

rjb, How is the rocker (back side) of the kick panel area look as well as the underside? Anything can be fixed if you have the time and paitence, seen alot worse.
Just from looking at the picture and not knowing what the back side/underside looks like I would... Take a bunch of measurments, more pictures. Get a piece of flimsy cardboard such as file folders or poster board, make a template of what you need to replace. Go buy a sheet of 18 gauge cold rolled steal and have at it. Do not cut out the cancer metal until you are happy with your patch work. From looking at this, again only from the top side I would fab up one piece and be done with it, but it is really going ot depend on the back side because if you have no structrual metal left there then you will need to fix that area first. I call this the can of whoop ass theory I take it by your attempting the floor pans you have a welder and know how to use it? I have documented all my floor pan replacement, trunk pans, 1/4 patch etc on this forum and have plenty of pics if you need more help. Search for progress updates under my username and you will see some pics of what I did. Also there are some other guys on here that have done a very good job as well. Do some searching of the board and you will be amazed at what you find. Bill

With all the rot, Id check the body to frame mount out (the front cab mount) completely. You may have rot through the left (from your pics) edge of the mount, the edge of the floor, and through the kick panel where all 3 of these come together in a "sandwhich". Mine did, and I removed the front mount from the car completely for repairs. My resto is a frame off btw so you might have problems getting it off if you go that route. On the passenger side, I had the same problem, and left it on. I found working around it difficult.

I have the body off the frame so getting to the cab mounts is not a problem. I have some rust around that area so I am concerned about fixing it. On the back side of the upper left floor pan is where another piece is welded to the back side of the floor pan and the cab mount is there. Bill I recently purchased a welder so I do not have a lot of experience welding but I thought this would be a good place to start/learn.You know how it goes though; as I inspect more and more of the car and begin repairs I discover more things that are tricky to repair. Obviously if just the centers of the floor need replacing it is not as bad as what I am looking at which is fabricating pieces to weld to. |

I read a suggestion on the other post I had where somebody layed the new floor pans over top the old ones and then cut trought both to get an accurate shape to butt weld. Does this sound good to everybody else? Figured if i used a cut off tool or something I would get a bout 1/16" gap would this work.

Did you build braces for the doors if you have the body off the frame and the doors off and dont brace them the doors might not fit again when you go to put them on

Laying the new pan over the old and cutting through both??? What happens when you take out the old pan and lay the new one in. When you lay the new one in, it seems that it would drop down further due to the space of the old pan, thus giving you too much of a gap for welding...unless im missing something here.

after thinking about laying the pan over the old one... may work, if you first cut out the old pan leaving enough material for a second cut through both layers, with the new pan resting on the bracing, and NOT the old pan. Ive never done this, just wanting to make sure your bases are covered.
