Hello all, Just rebuilt a 455 for me 72 ho. I didnt get 15 miles on the rebuild and watched the oil pressure drop to 20 at 650 rpm. It was 60 at about 700. Soon after i heard the rod rattle. I pulled the engine and found the oil pump screan coverd with cam lube...??? A spun #7 rod bearing.
And mains that i wont get into. Yes, this is a oiling prob. What happend? Why was the cam lube in the screan? Took the impellers out of the oil pump m-54ds and looks like they were rubbing the sides of the pump. I used engine assembly lube. Im guessing with time the pump clogged with cam lube? Thanks for your time..Terry Harris

Cam lube won't clog a pump. It just sits there looking like it would. Same as it sits in the valley from splash and off the lifters, etc. You had other problems that led to your failure.

Thanks for the reply. So ya think maybe it was a oil pump prob? I plastigauged the rods and mains they were fine. Guess it would have to be the pump? The inside was pretty chewed on the sides..
Well, anyway turned a standard 455 crank into a paper weight.

Shouldn't be a paperweight.

Turn the mains down to 3 inches and cut the rods until they are clean and drop it in a 400 with one of Kens shim kits, just whatever you do dont throw it away.

Great, find something new everyday. I didnt know the crank could go to 3in. I know 400's were 3in mains.
But didnt know you could go that far with a 455 crank? Cool. So I turn it and sell it as a 400 crank? Good call guys..!!!

Me , me! Send me the crank and I'll spare you all that trouble of having to turn it down. You don't want to have to fool with all that and my 400 would love you for it

Terry,

First did you disassemble and inspect the pump before installation? Secondly did you pre-lube the pump before installation? And thirdly did you pre oil the engine prior to start up? Is it possible that you popped out a plug in the front of the engine? I usually tap and install threaded plugs in the front because those plugs can pop out and cause you to loose oil pressure. Did the engine get hot? Did you cut the filter open and inspect it for dirt and or metal?

Hello Tim,

I Didnt open the pump before putting it on the engine. I did pre lube the engine not the pump. Once on the engine stand and the other time before startup. I would say it ran about 210 or 220 deg during breakin. Dont know about the front plug will have to check on that one. This is the first Pontiac engine that i have built. But the first few times i started it the pressure was 60 at idle. I can get pics if you or others would like to see? Just tell me what you would like. Thanks....Terry

Terry,

I am totally serious about that crank. If you decide to part with it just let me know
