I have a 70 GTO with a Ralley Clock, the clock is currently not working, but I want to convert it to a quarts mechanism in the near future. When I plug the two light bulbs into the clock housing they light up, this is with the ignition and headlights off. The bulb harness (light gray) plugs into a light gray harness wire. Is this the correct part of the harness? Any body know why this is doing this? This wiring harness was converted from idiot lights to gauges, would this have any thing to do with it? I don't have a wiring diagram to check this against. Thanks for any help.

The grey is the dash lights wire, im not sure why you would have power with the lights off. Do your dash lights work correctly in the other pods? What happens when you do turn on the lights, what about when you dim them?

The rest of my dash lights work fine, the dimmer also works correctly. When I turn the headlights on the clock lights turn off. This is very puzzling? Could it have some thing to do with the power for the clock? I think the wire that powers the clock is orange with a black stripe, I will have to double check.

Dude, I have the same problem...in fact I ended up blowing a fuse when I hooked the ground up. What I am thinking is that because the ground wasn't on really good and I took it off and put it on like 5 times in a matter of a few seconds it popped. I was using the same wires you were. When the ground wasn't hooked, I had no power to the clock, but with the ground hooked up the lights in the clock were on with the headlights off..... I thought I'd be the only one with this problem, so I figured I wouldn't ask and not worry about it. It sux to be us with the same problem, but thanks for asking for the both of us.

Later

Eric

unplug your orange power lead for the clock and see if it still does it then. Seems to me your clock housing has a positive charge going thru it so that when you plug the light into it when the lights are off the light has a power and a ground(im thinking grey rests at ground)and when the lights are on you have 2 powers so the light goes off. Its a long shot but see if your lights work fine with the orange wire unplugged from the clock then you at least have it traced to something. If they do work normally after removing the power then I would check the connector to make sure it is properly isolated from the clock casing.

I wonder if the power lead for the clock is properly isolated from the housing? If its not it could make the housing hot, I'll take a meter and check the housing. I have another clock on the shelf I can open up to see how its assembed.

428 I'll try removing the orange wire, and see what happens, Thanks

Eric, does your clock work, other than the light prob?

428 & Eric I think I know what's going on I removed the orange wire to the clock as suggested, and plugged in the lights. They didn't light up, I then turned the headlights on, and they still didn't light. I then took a jumper wire and clipped it to ground, and then to the back of the clock case. The lights turned on, I then moved the jumper from the case to the power terminal of the clock, and the lights came back on. This confirms that the power feed for the clock is some how shorted to the case. It also tells me the clock case is not grounded. So I'll have to pull the clock apart and find out where the power is making contact with the case. Thanks for your help.

Cool, I figured that had to be it. If you are going to get a quartz movement for it then you should get all the bushings that may be bad now to fix the problem with it. Good luck with that.
