I know this is a dumb question but I need to confirm. Which direction to advance and which to retard timing on a 326. My 65' Tempest has developed an awful ping under load when car heats up. I want to try timing first. Any other suggestions if this doesnt fix it?

Loosen it up, when you turn it and the idle goes up thats advanced. When you turn it back and it bogs thats retarded.

Turning it CW on a Pontiac advances the timing, CCW retards it.

Get a timing light!
How about oil consumtion? Does the choke come off properly? Is the carb flooding? Time for a rebuild due to carbon buildup? |

Take of the distributor cap and check the centrifugal advance weights are not stuck due to rust. This is a common problem on HEI ignitions but I am not sure if points setups had the same problem.
Are you sure the car is not overheating? |

The car is running a little hotter than I would expect although there is no boil over or steam. When running your hand over the hood after a good drive I think it is a little too warm and have been told the same by a guy at a local cruise. I just assumed all Pontiacs ran a little hot...

Brian, you can't guess at whether the engine is overheating, you need an accurate temp gauge.
