Just when we thought she was ready to go, we discovered that the rear of the TH400 is almost touching the floor of the car! It appears that the cross member is too high (don't know what else it could be). The driveshaft almost rubs on the floor. Question: did former owner put in a wrong crossmember? Is there a different crossmember for TH400 than 4 speed (in case they were converting or something)? Does anyone have the correct part number for TH400 crossmember for 67 GTO? Any help out there?

Its possible that someone used the crossmember or the area on the frame where the crossmember bracket bolts as a jacking point. If thats the case the crossmember may be bent or the frame in that area may be bent.

Same thing happened with me. After putting in new floor pans and bolting up the t400, the tranny hit the floor. Took the crossmember out and sure enough, it was bent up at least an inch or more. They make repops of that crossmember now. It took a lot for me to straighten mine, I'd go with the new one if you can swing it

Take it to any frame shop and have a little clearance pressed in. If your driveshaft is not actually touching, you might not need any, though. This is what I did, but my u-joint was actually touching the floorpan!

Also, keep in mind that your crossmember should not be straight. That is, if you put it on a level surface, both ends should not be able to touch the ground at the same time. If they can, then somebody used the center of yours as a jacking point.

There are only two crossmembers for '64-'72 Pontiac A-bodies: ones for standard unboxed frames and ones for heavy-duty boxed frames. Transmission irrelevant.

Charlie
I have a spare crossmember I would sell(an original) which I believe is for a hardtop. If you are interested, call me and we can verify the dimensions, and discuss price. We aren't too far away from each other. My # is 616-866-6780.

I ran across this old post while doing a search.
I'm in the process of rebuilding My '68 LeMans Convertible.
The Car came with a 300 2 speed, and I going to put in a TH 400 short tail.
Looks like our sponsor only sells 3 cross members.

64-72 hardtop
64-67 convert
68-72 convert

So I should be alright with the same cross member. Part # 9796242 just move it to the right set of holes in the frame.
I'll post this in the 68 69 forum also.
Thanks in advance.

I ran into same problem when I installed my headers. Floor jack was put against the bolts that bolt crossmember in and bent them upward. Carried car to bodyshop and they put it on frame machine and pulled crossmember down. End of problem.

Aftermarket poly trans mounts can often do that too.

They're too thick, just compare one to the OE rubber mounts once & you'll see what I'm talking about.

X2 I typically have to cut material/ threads off the surface of every Poly mount (using a mill) to get them close to a factory mount. Lots of thread still available after the milling to correct height.

I just put a new OE style rubber tranny mount on the TA. It is thicker than the oem tranny mount by about the thickness of the mount plate the catcon support was bolted to. Since I no longer have a catcon I was going to use the plate as a spacer and possibly as a mount for a driveshaft loop much like PTFB sells. With the thicker rubber mount I can delete the plate altogether and my DS geometry should stay the same as factory, but I'll be measuring nonetheless.
