Guy's i am racking my brains out trying to fiqure what the hell is going on? My 71 T/A wont start. About a month ago i tried to start up the car and it acted like a dead battery well i kind of pushed hard on the ignition switch and low and behold it started? Now it does not i have replaced the starter/Ignition switch(electrical) not key tumbler. All lights/horn/radio/electrical fuel pump work when key is turned on. Battery is good. But the car refuses to start still Need Help?????? Thanks Matt

check your starter. my dads firebird had new battery alternator and ign switch and it wouldnt start so we put in the starter and it still didnt work. later we found out the motor was lockedup.

IS THE TRANSMISSION AN AUTO OR MANUAL?
IF IT IS AN AUTOMATIC, YOU MAY HAVE A BAD OR OUT OF ADJUSTMENT NUETRAL SAFETY SWITCH. THE SWITCH SHOULD BE LOCATED UNDER THE DASH ON TOP OF THE STEERING COLUMN. LOCATE THE PLUG ON THE SWITCH THAT HAS 2 PURPLE WIRES AND UN-HOOK IT. MAKE SURE THE SHIFTER IS IN THE PARK POSITION AND USE A JUMPER WIRE BETWEEN THE 2 PURPLE WIRES AND THEN TRY TO START THE CAR. THIS PROCEDURE WILL TELL YOU IF THE PROBLEM IS IN THE SAFETY SWITCH. |

not sure what part you replaced. Was it the ing. switch that attaches to the lower part of the sterring column. If so there is a little bit of an adjustment in them. Use a test light at the starter sol. to make sure if you have power on the small term. when your in the cranking mode. If you do then it is in the starter if you dont then start looking at the switch if the net. saftey is ok as described in the other post. if that is all ok then it could be in the sterring column with the rod that moves the ing. switch on the lower part of the column. it can get bent. and if its a tilt column there is a piece that breaks pretty easy.

one more thing about the NUETRAL SAFETY SWITCH. if it is a manual trans the NUETRAL SAFETY SWITCH will be on the clutch pedal jumper the two wires together
