ran 1 tank, 11.5 comp.ratio heads milled .030, drove right out on airport runway with flashers on,took about 6 seconds to fill it up,car ran great,fast, no more pinging, but at $3.00 a gal,went back to pump prem.(this was my daily driver)..060 over 389 tri.
thought I was wrong once.......but I was mistakin |

great points on both sides. Think i'll stick to the racing gas just to be safe. I don't think av gas will hurt my car, but i don't want to take a chance.

Since BigB is talking racecar only, I would think the race fuel is the right answer.
For those of us who do the street/strip thing, this article by Eric Douthitt makes a whole lot of sense and I know 2 guys here in the Phoenix area who are using his Toluene formula with success: Octane article Note that in the article he also talks about "AV Gas" and only recommends its use in a narrow set of circumstances. (Race only car of about 11:1 compression and specifically jetted for the avgas.) "Nothing Beats an Ol' Goat..."

I didn't realize that nitrous was flammable........any more so than oxygen. BTW, I've run AVGas many times in my old GTO, and I can tell you that it did less damage (if any) than the detonation would have caused by using the pump gas that was available in the early '80's. Heck, we ran ALL of the fuel trucks and ground equipment on it as well, and even the 1967 IH (original 20 year old engine) fuel truck ran fine on the stuff. Both had been run for years on 100LL. Hey Goatman,
They'll figure it out sooner or later Huh? And Tin, I believe any compressed gas in shipment is considered hazardous material. Flammable or not. Oh yeah, and 1/2 of you are mixing. That doesn't count.

I ran Av100LL 15 years ago. A friend was a lineman at a small Airport and they had to drain off 5 Gallons a day to make sure there wasnt any mosture in it.He would oftin give the gas too me. I never had a problem, in fact the 10 to 1 engine really seemed to like the stuff. I think what it comes down to is what is done to the engine. High compression engines should most definatly use racing fuel. On a moderate compression engine, properly jetted it seems to do fine. I guess like most things it as its place.

I wouldn't call that a great article on AV gas. First off I suspect bias based on the source of the article, and it gave no facts to back up the allegations made about av gas. My throttle response using av gas (100LL) was just as snappy as with race gas. I think it is a great fuel for drag racing as is or mixed with pump gas or race gas depending on your needs. As long as your supporting the octane requirement of your engine and you are jetted correctly you will not experience any detrimental effects using av gas. An aircraft engine is an internal combustion engine the same as an automotive engine. An aircraft piston will burn up if you run it too lean also. The only reason race gas is so expensive is because it is not produced in the volume that autmotive gasolene or that av gas is. Be informed and make the best choice for your needs. Another possible reason aircraft engines operate on av-gas, O.K. a few. 1 they have mixture controls to keep the engine from leaning out. 2 They also have cylinder head temp guages and exhaust temp guages and cowl flaps to keep engine at the perfect temperature, also they run at lower rpm's, not sure of the rpm effect though.

The mixture control on an aircraft engine is there to compensate for altitude. Not really an issue on a car unless you drive up and down the Rockies all day. They also operate over a very dynamic temperature range. Our Pontiacs are thermostatically controlled, water cooled engines, so if the cooling system is working correctly, it should operate over a very small temp range. I put AvGas in one of my motors quite a few years back on a tip that I could save a few bucks. Car revved up like I took about 10 jet sizes out of it. Now if I had to jet it up 10 sizes to compensate how much am I saveing at $1/gal cheaper.

Wow! my first two page post. Who would have thought it would come from av gas? If a car can run on 93 octane and you run av gas do you still have to change the jetting?? Just curious.

I've run the av gas without problems but I did run across something kind of strange. I had to get the sender out of my fuel cell and the tank was about 3/4 full. The fuel was a 50/50 mix of 93 and av gas. I had to reach inside the cell to take a couple nuts off and when I pulled my arm out the skin on my arm was white and looked dried out. No big suprise but the skin on my hand was normal and there was a perfect line around my wrist. That tells me the pump and av gas were not mixing. Are the specific gravities different? It seems when you run the tank low you always get a strong av gas odor even if I haven't put any in in weeks. Any ideas?

In trying to stay CHEAPER than race gas I was mixing 115 Cam 2 and 93 unleaded 50/50. Someone at the track last weekend sugested running straight 112 and running my engine cooler (like 125 vs. 170)and I would run .2 of a second faster. Last run on Sat. was a 11.46 @ 114. First run on Sun. was a 11.26 @ 116. No more mixing for me. I do nead to decrease in jet size because it is running rich now.
Who ever thought pinewood derby cars would lead to this!
