Well I pick up my block and crank tomorrow.
While waiting for the machine shop to do their thing I settled on the Summit 2802 cam and lifter set, they arrived today. The lifters are HT-951 and seem VERY EASY to push down on. I can depress the plunger about 1/4 inch with my finger. My old Crane lifters that I have are very hard to push down, can't do it with a finger at all. So my question is, are these HT-951 lifters any good? I know they are made by Melling, but why are they so weak? Should I take the guts out of the Cranes and put them in the HT-951 bodies? Or just install them as they are? Thanks |

Just lube them and install them. They're weak because there's no oil in them. Prime the oil pump be for starting and go beat up on some rice.

The spring you can feel is there to push the inner piston up against the circlip, so it has some 'feel' when adjusting the lifters. The lifter will actually work without that spring.

Thanks, I will leabe them alone and use as is.
The motor assembled nicely, clearances are all within spec. They only had to turn the mains on the crank an additional .01, so it is now at .02 under. It is assembled to the oil pan. Took me all day, (11 hours), as I spent a LOT of time cleaning everything for a second time before I installed the part. I should have it all back in the car and ready to break in by next weekend. |

I just assembled my 455 with the summit 2802 cam and lifter set. I sumerged my lifters in a bucket of oil and worked the plunger with an old pushrod to help get oil in them.

Did the bucket of oil trick today and got lots of air out of the lifters. Seemed to work very well.
Coated the base with Moly lube and installed. (Of course the cam is fully coated with Moly lube too). Stuffed the engine and tranny into the car together as a unit today. Too tired to continue - but hopefully I will get to fire it up and break it in on Saturday. |
