If you ever find that you can't start your pontiac don't overlook the possibility that the neutral safety switch is the culprit.
It can mimmic a bad starter and or solenoid or a weak battery.
I just had an experience where I had driven only a few miles and stopped them when I went to restart nothing not even a click from the solenoid.I checked everthing I could think of,cables,connections,grounds,I even tried tapping on the solenoid to no avail.
I ended up getting it towed back to my house.
Then I searched this forum for starting problems and found the information that helped me find the problem.
The car would start if I played with the floor shifter but only in park and not everytime I tried to start her,it would not start in neutral.
My solution was to take out the old switch and bypass it.

that's good that you found out what happened to your car. But, I would fix the problem too. About the time you are on the cell, the kids are screaming, the wife is nagging, you will forget and start the damn thing and drive thru your garage or the neighbors lawn!!! Have a great 4th

I would rather leave it the way I fixed it,from what I have read on this forum the switch is very hard to come by for my car which is a 67 GTO with floor shift.
I have never tried to start a car in gear,so I don't think it will be a problem.
Besides I would rather have one less thing to worry about as far as starting goes.
Just my .02.

Have u'all tried adjusting it? there is an adjustment on it and sometimes it slips. Just loosen it up and try starting it in neutral and park and moving it a little bit till it does work right. Some times the quick fix and the won't have any problems with it will come back and haunt u'all. How bout u'all reach in to start the car to go some where and u'all end up like the guy in the car craft road test and the car backs over or runs u'r self over or some one else and then u'all will feel real good about that quick cheap fix. It ain't so bad with a manual cuss the early cars didn't have a neutral safety switch like the new ones and people usually checks the gear or depresses the clutch befor they start it. Put the safety switch back on cuss I've done it and it is a sick feelin when the car runs away from u'all and hits something. I was lucky only minor damage to the car!and my pride!

Point well taken,but I always check to make sure I'm in park or neutral before starting my car,I just don't like the neutral safety switch anyway.I guess I'll just have to risk it.
If you ask me it is another thing to go wrong,just my opinion.
Besides that switch has seen better days and they are not available from typical restoration sources that I am aware of.
I am also chasing a hot start problem so one less thing to worry about makes sense to me.
