What would cause a carb to bog or hesitate during both heavy and light acceleration??
Carb has been rebuilt but still wants to act up a bit. |

Try moving the accel pump linkage to the hole closest to the carb, that would be the top hole.

Hey thanks,
Yea, the pump seems to be functioning fine. It was replaced when I rebuilt it. It ran well after initial install, strong right off the line. Now it wants to bog or hesitate or whatever you call it. Oh yea, it's a 65 carter 3896-S with stock manifold on a 66 389 w/turbo hydramatic. Engine and car are all bone stock. It runs and idles just fine with adjustment screws responding well easily adjusting mix, according to the vacuum guage. |

On a Carter the accellerator pump may work fine but the pump may not be giving you enough of a "squirt". On the acc. pump linkage there should be a bracket with three holes in it. Try each of these holes to see if it makes any difference in your performance. If that is not the cure then start looking for vacuum leaks and be sure the air horn [top of the carb] is tight to the body of the carb. When the carb was rebuilt did they use the old springs on the metering rods ? The metering rods come off the seat of the jet based on the vacuum being pulled by the carb, maybe you just need a different set of springs. Good luck

No, I didn't change the springs. I cleaned them up real good (polished? the pistons and rods) with very fine (4x) steel wool but used the same springs. I currently have the pump rod in the top hole.
Thanks Mr Cat... Happy Hollidays... |

Darn, I was hoping it was just your setting on the accel pump. Time to start looking for vacuum leaks. Maybe you can get Santa to sprinkle some magic dust on it when he comes by. Good luck, keep us posted.
