<<HC ppm 196; NO ppm 129; CO% 3.66; CO2% 12.0;
02 0.4%. This was the right bank. Similar numbers on opposing left bank. (No cat).>>

Bill:
That CO is awful high. Now I don't know what combo you are running, but from the NO numbers it looks like you still have the EGR valve and it still works(or you have a cam with lots of overlap). If you still have a charcoal canister on it, change it. It will bring the CO levels way down. They get old and start holding fuel, when it is purged, it richens the mixture way up, and there isn't a carb adjustment in the world that can compensate for it. Except for the CO numbers, that engine will pass most states emmisions tests. Just my .02 cents

TinIndian--The charcoal canister is new and the overlap on the 270H cam is merely 50 degrees. This engine has less than 1,500 miles on it. Carbon monoxide you say is high, now that you know the canister is new and properly attached plus the mild overlap, what are your thoughts? I am curious. Bill

I am glad we don't have the dyno around here, D/FW TX. We still have to pass at idle and 2500rpm. As for visual depends on the shop. I can't wait till 2002, I will be getting antique plates, and have to pass only the visual.

Bill:
Looks like some carb work is in order to get those CO numbers down. Leaning the idle mixture using the mixture screw will help some(as lean as you can go and maintain a good idle). Next would be to check Power piston for wear. Too much clearance between the power piston and the piston bore will cause improper operation. Check the power piston spring, too much of a spring will keep the piston up during all engine operation. And the last thing to check in the power piston circuit is the vaccum passage. Make sure it isn't plugged.
Of course the primary metering rods and jets will make a difference if they are changed.
Last but not least, those pain in the butt well plugs. I have never seen a Q-Jet yet that they haven't leaked.
I have gotten engines without cats under 1.20 CO, and engines with cats to 0.00 CO. It takes some time and a gas analyzer, but that Q-Jet can be made to run very clean.

TinIndian--Yep, I came up with an overly rich carburetor that needs adjustment too. My plugs clearly show a rich condition. You're also right about using an analyzer. That would make the chore less hit and miss. Lean the mixture screw and backing them out in small matching increments will test my patience but that's the way to go.

I am like the lucky guy in Minnesota. I reside in Tennessee and we have no inpsections or emission checking systems. Its all a load of #### anyway. They also did away with it in South Carolina. In Georgia, I got by due to to age the of car(i forget the details). In North Carolina, I had to get inspections in the neighboring county(Wake County still regulated it).

Here in Washington state,my 1980 bird' has to pass the pipe' test,no underhood inspection,only gas cap check for presure and no mods to unleaded filler.I'm currently building a 400 c.i. .060 over with ross pistons,total seal rings,eagle rods,ultradyne solid lifter cam with 518" lift intake,530" lift exhaust,243 degrees duration intake and 251 degrees exhaust at .050...Intake is a performer RPM,holley carb 780 cfm vac. secondaries...3 tube headers,2500 stall converter,turbo 350 trans,3.42 rear 10 bolt posi.I will install 2 highflow cats to pass DOE...It also has a cheater NOS system set at 200HP for fun..I'll post the results here when I finish the motor install and see what the readings are ....The cats should easily rid the motors high HC readings to pass...:-))

David
I know what you mean. I used to live in Clearwater, just across the way with my 77 T/A when they started the emission testing. I had to put two new converters on it and a new gas tank with the restricter I picked up from copher brothers. I got a lot of low cost parts out of that junk yard. Every year it would fail by just a fraction and every year I would lean it out just enough to get it to pass. Now I live in West Virginia. No emission testing here!!! Not yet anyway.

My brother and others confirm the fact that the "Sunshine State", "State of Chad" has done away with all emissions testing. That's wonderful news for the musclecar enthusiasts, however, I believe, it would have been wiser to exempt all cars 18 years or older, as that would take care of the clunkers that will never be kept for restoration.

Here in SE Ohio, no one is ever tested for emmissions. This is the poorest part of the state. If we had emmissions testing, everyone would be fined and there would be about one-tenth of the cars on the road.
