 trans is not shifting into 3rd gear, but it hits everything else. what should i look into? where should i start??????

I had a similar problem with my 72 Safari and it turned out to be a vacuum hose loose at the carb.

Try disconnecting the wire from the connector on the drivers side of the trans.
