Are there any books that show how to remove a 68 gto dash? I need to replace the bulbs in my instrument cluster and have heard it is very difficult to do without removing the dash first.

the 68 body or service manual should tell.
pull the dash pad first, there are screws along the bottom of it above the glove box [4] and above the cluster [ 3 ]. my car also had a screw on each end of the pad facing the door panel but i don't think they're factory. pull the pad towards you the top will unclip from the metal. remove the radio knobs, wiper switch plug, lighter wire, h/lamp switch knob & shaft. remove the small panel from under the strng column and remove the column mounting bolts [3]so the column will drop a couple of inches. reach up behind the cluster from the floor and disconnect the speedo cable [it unscrews from the head]it's a good time to lube it also. on the back side of the dash where the cluster fascia meets the metal dash there are 2 or 3 studs with nuts that secure the bottom of the fascia to the dash structure. remove the screws attaching the heater control to the fascia. [3 i think] pull towards you on the cluster fascia asm . when the fascia is out far enough to get you hand behind it disconnect the harness from the cluster pod. a/c may have a few more fasteners to deal with. do yourself a favor and ground the metal cluster housing to the firewall while you have it out.mike [ May 12, 2002, 01:31 AM: Message edited by: mike nixon ]

Thanks, I needed that info. I am changing my interior color and I need to paint the dash pad.
As far as the bulbs, it is tight, but I replaced mine laying on the floor and reaching up behind the cluster. It's not easy, but maybe a lot less work in the long run.

Mike -
The screws behind the cluster, how does one reach them? The four bolts along the bottom support and the four behind the glovebox were not a problem. I tried for some time over the weekend to get at the three behind the cluster but ended up walking away, less something became broken as a result of frustration. Thanks. |

To reach those screws you will have to remove the dash pad. Also you will have to drop the steering
column if you are going to remove the cluster

One more thing when removing the dash pad, there are two retainers at each end of the dash pad on the back side that press into a metal clip attached to the dashboard. To completely remove the dash pad, you have to pull kind of hard to get these things out (and in). I actaully cracked the plasic grain on my dash pad when I first re-installed mine. The easy way to get these to release without damaging anything is to reach up under the dash with a stubby screwdriver in hand and insert the screw driver blade between the two parts of the clip that are under tension. Turn the screw driver enough that only a little effort at the dash pad will cause the "bullet" to pull out. This will hopefully save you some headaches later.
