Been thinking again. I really want to use an EFI kit on my early 195 4cyl. The fuel delivery part is not a problem, but the spark is. I need to run a GM HEI from 80-96 to make the computer work with the ignition. I have access to the right type of HEI (80' Pontiac v-8), but as you know, they are all for v-8 engines. Question is; What would be the problem of installing the v-8 HEI and only installing plug wires on every other point on the dist. cap? As long as I get the wires in the right order, this would work wouldn't it? O.K. you can start laughing at me now.

Prevert? I'm way past that! I'm a Postvert!

Why wouldn't it work? Even if you needed all 8 plugs firing to make it work properly you could mount 4 'dummy' spark plugs on the firewall in a small sheetmetal box. Saw it done on a Chevy V4 (V8 sawed in half) powered sprint car. It had a V8 Vertex magneto on it and needed to be wired to fire all 8 plugs so as not to damage it. Sounds like a good idea. Do keep us posted on how it all works out!

If that spark is not accepted by the spark plug it will jump all around the cap looking for an exit. Thats my opinion I dont believe it will work. Someone may know better than me. If you dont believe what I say disconnect one wire off a v8 and see what happens. Dont keep your fingers on the cap when you do it.

I would try this: disassemble the V8 distributor and take out the toothed coil. File off every other prong, giving you a 4 cylinder unit. Do the smae to the outer part of the coil. Make sure you remove the right prongs that don't match where you want the plug wires.

Making your 8-cylinder distributor into a 4-cylinder unit might not work if the EFI computer wants to 'see' 8 cylinders firing. Let us know how it works out, neat engine project!

I'll see how it goes. Right now I have one of those pro-jection things I'm going to put on it for a while. They don't have the best reputation, but I've had good luck with this particular unit. If it doesn' work well, I'm going to try to go with a "real" EFI setup, thus the distributor questions. Otherwise. it's going to be some kind of carb. I'm going to keep my options open though.

Talk with Dave Ray at www.davessmallbodyheis.com He can MAKE almost any distributor into an HEI, and he has some experience converting over to computer controls as well. Great prices & service.

Would it be possible to take the guts (sensor ring and module) from an Iron Duke HEI and mount them in a v8 body?

I have been thinking along the same lines! am going to look into installing a Pertronics in my stock dist. Was also thinking about getting a cranktrigger setup & grinding off the 4 points on the reluctor that wont be used. What about drilling & taping the manifold for injectors & mounting a throttle body?? With todays electronics the possibilities are endless! Its all just a matter of programing. This could get very interesting!!

O.K. Here's the deal.... I have been doing some research and asking lots of questions. It looks like I'm going to use one of my Holley two barrel throttle bodies (670 cfm) and a Commander 950 upgrade/retrofit kit. I'm going to use an MSD crank trigger and pop two of the four magnets out of of the ring. This system will allow for complete control of the ignition/timing and fuel for a fully modern EFI system. The guys at Holley say it will work great. I finished modding the intake manifold this week and I'll have some pics on my webshots account soon. As soon as I can come up with $800 for the holley kit and another $225 for the trigger, I'll be fuel injected!
