Little more complicated than just water pump heights, esp if pulleys have been mismatched. In comparing water pumps, also need to compare the thickness of the timing cvers they attach to...
The '64-65, 66, 67, & 68 timing cover is aprox 2 11/16" thick & with waterpump mounted, there is a distance of aprox 6 1/2" from block mating surface to w/p pulley mating flange. The '69 & later timing cover is aprox 2" thick & with water pump mounted, distance is aprox 7" from block mating surface to w/p pulley mating flange. Often the question is brought up..."Which balancer, which timing cover, which pulleys?" IF, one is doing a high point resto & has to run 64, 65, or (thicker groove) '66 water pump pulleys along with '66 & earlier p/s pump set-up, it is smart to retain early style timing cover, have original balancer rebuilt, & use '64-68 waterpump. If one wants to do away with expensive early timing covers & troublesome balancers, one can use common GM '68+ balancer (or aftermarket version). To do so one will use '69+ timing cover, '68-70 lower pulley(s), plus '69-70 (exc '70 1/2 V8 Firebird) waterpump pulley. This will work on '64-68 cars, one just gives up some originality in appearance on the '64-66's. '67 can retain '67-70 powersteering pump & brackets, & many will be fooled that set-up is not stock, until they notice the '68+ style balancer. Hope this helps.

68 pumps use a different timing cover than 69 and up. The pumps themselves are not interchangeable between 68 to 69 unless you also change the timing cover. Also, 69 had 2 different shaft lengths. I have the 69 dimensions at home if you need them.

Problem also exists that a '69 (short waterpump) on a '69 timing cover will not give same block mtg surface to water pump mtg flange distance that a '64-68 w/p & timing cover does.

All the 69-72 waterpumps are 4.5" deep except the early 69 units which were 4" deep. They are interchangeable as long as you have the correct pulley.

Including the seperator plate, the distance from the block mating surface to the water pump mating surface is 2-5/8". The '64-68 is 2-11/16" thick. Are there 69-up covers that are 2" thick? |

RPM,
Yes I did mismeasure the the '69 timing cover thickness, must have measured the lower portion...DOLP. Thanks for keeping me on my toes Did go back & remeasure several more, & my mismeasurement was limited to the '69+ timing cover housing thickness. The '69+ timing cover with original "tall" style waterpump will measure between 7"-7 3/32" from block mating surface to hub flange. Have found variances in this depth due to cheap repop pumps & different rebuilders of pumps.

Yea, the distance from block to pulley flange I got on one car is aprox 7-1/2" (it has the long pump). I am thinking of installing the 11-bolt pump on my 67 so I need to know how much further the fan will be placed inside the shroud.
