This could have been real bad. Not sure what happened but the oil pressure when I started the car up after changing the oil was over 100 psi.

I'd open it up and check the filter material is still intact.
My friend had to rebuild his 428 (running the 80psi SD pump) when a Pennzoil filter collapsed under the pressure and filled the engine with filter material.

hey mike, i had this happen to me many moons ago, it was a stuck oil pump pressure relief valve, it was stuck closed. when the engine started, the oil pressure pegged the 100psi gage, i heard a pop, then the oil pressure started falling. i replaced the pump and all was fine

It would be hard pressed for pontiac relief to stick. It is a large steel ball. If the filter has gone bad an damaged the engine, I would go back to the manufacturer and make a claim. It happens all the time and they pay many claims.

Thanks for the feedback, there must have been something wrong with the filter. I put a new one on last night and cranked up the car. Everything seems happy.

USE A PREMIUM FILTER SUCH A NAPA GOLD FILTER OR WIX........THEY ARE THE SAME. DON'T USE A $3.49 FILTER ON A "EXPENSIVE" MOTOR..ISN'T WORTH IT !!
WIX WILL STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS. I USE NAPA GOLD/WIX PERIOD. I WORKED FOR NAPA FOR YEARS AND HAD NO ISSUES WITH THE GOLD FILTERS BUT DID WITH THEIR "SECOND" LINE FILTERS....$1.99 AND UP. THEY MAY BE OK FOR BEATERS..........

JUST NOTICED YOUR FILTER FAILED AT THE CRIMP...TYPICAL FAILURE OF "CHEAPER" FILTERS OR THEY BLOW THE SEALING RING OUT...

To reiterate the results of the famous "filter study" of a few years ago, The Fram garden variety filters were poor, the AC-Delcos were good, lots of media area, and good construction materials. The WIX, (NAPA) gold, (same filter) were good also.

I've never bought a Fram filter since. Theire high perf line may be a lot better, but the filter study did not examine them.

For those who have never read it, here is the link:

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

I'm impressed with the amount of detail the author went into to do the study.

George

The Fram HP line has a heavier case and many of them are larger than standard filters but they still use the crappy cardboard end caps. For disposable filters I think WIX are the best in terms of flow combined with filtering capability.

Agree on Fram filters. We cut open a Fram filter.
Inside was a filter media with about 1/2 the number of pleats as a NAPA Gold, in other words only half the filtering as a Gold filter. It had cardboard ends glued to media and had a string tied around the media to keep it round I guess. it had a piece of tin bent (bi-metal spring) for a bypass spring instead of a real spring!! Pure junk.
Sorry but that's the way it is, I won't use a Fram om my lawn mower !!!

Oh trust me, they can stick. Had a rough experience that many can attest to at Maple Grove. Dumped about 6 qts at 120 mph plus. And on Video.
Car had about 20 passes prior and 50 since then.

After The Experience Changed the filter and rev'd engine quite high and a few times and it finally returned to normal. Went to Norwalk and raced the whole weekend. That's why I swear by Synthetic oils.
But when the relief was stuck. The needle came all the way around to the zero stop peg. Don't know how far is was going.
I now strickly use the Fram Racing filter with a higher burst pressure casing.

Ken,

Did you ever come up with a theory as to "why or how" the check valve (ball) stuck?

It seems unlikly to happen...

Nope, never did. Like I said had run the car at home with over 15/20 passes. Even made 3 passes the previous night at M.G. T & T, then happened on a Q-16 qualifying pass the next day.
Replaced the filter, added 6 qts of oil, got pi$$ed and hammered the engine, oil pressure straighten out, ran low 9's at Norwalk, went home, made a dozen or so passes, Ran Orlando, then played some more. Tore it down over the winter. No damage. Go figure????

It was the year Paul Rash & I had our Match race deal going on and He wasn't ready at Maple Grove, so............ I just figured he put one of those

Voodoo Hex's

on me.

Bwahahahahahahaha.

I had a check ball stick in a 80# pump a few years back. When I pulled it apart I found a tiny little piece of metal wedged between the ball and case. Talk about a pain in the a$$

Gonna piss some people off. I plug the bypass off & use delco or wix, and lee(in the past when they where available), never had a problem with 60lb gm pumps.

Fram filters are crap no mater what part number you get. The delco filters have never given me a problem yet and I use the PF24 on both my Bonneville and my Skylark for over 7 years each.
