if you had an a-body thats all stock appearing with a 455/400 combo, what cam and converter do you think could get you in the elevens with a 323 gear? 9.6/1 qjet iron intake

I would think a 068 cam and a 7500 stall hard hitting convertor combined with a 8.50 14 tire should get you their with no problem!

I agree with Jim, to a point, as I think it will take ALL of those things he mentioned PLUS the addition of a 500-HP fogger kit.

I think you can do it but it won't be very driveable. You'll need to run open exhuast. Cam in the neighborhood of 250-260@ .050 lift should be as much as you can control. Converter should be a stocker type setup around 4500 flash/stall. I figure you'll be off about 3-5 tenths what a stocker can run with an equal chassis. 3 for the manifolds and 1-2 for the gear.

Hey guys, doesn't Jim Hand run in the high 11s with a RAIV cam w/Rhoads lifters/ported #64 heads/3.31 gears/modified stock iron intake and a 10" Continental 'Jim Hand special' converter? He has a fairly heavy A-body wagon, weighs about 3850 w/o driver. Runs a full exhaust with 4-tube headers and the Dr Gas 'X' crossover too.
I know his combo is very well-refined, but it can be duplicated with some careful work and dedication. 11s with exhaust manifolds. Hmmmm....a tall order but MAY be possible if they were Ram Air repros with the large 2-1/2" or 3" outlet, Extrude-Honed ($500 Let's go racing! www.outlawpontiacs.com/members/B-Man2.php www.outlawpontiacs.com/members/B-Man.php [This message was edited by b-man on February 11, 2003 at 08:36 PM.]

so that 7500 stall would get me close? i like the idea behind the new class called f.a.s.t factory appearing stock tire. if the big buicks and chrysler hemi motors can compete with the chevies then why cant a pontiac be built up in the same manner.i kinda like the idea of racing on a set of old bias ply 8.45x14 tires.

yes...it has been done!
dan jensen has coaxed 11's out of his 455HO lemans specifically for the F.A.S.T. series.

Forced induction may not be what you are looking for but I'm shooting for 11's with a mild 455/3.42 gears and a turbo pushing 10PSI. I'm using 1972 GTO manifolds. The car has ran 108MPH so far with 2.2 60ft times and the valves floating at 4500rpms. I also had the secondaries disconnected and that helped the valve floating. Over the winter I have replaced the valve springs, redid the exhaust, bought a nice carb hat and put on an intercooler. Should be capable of 11's. and it idles smooooooth.

I've tried and failed. 4-tube headers were used, and success. BVravery would be to Re-Install the Long-Branch manifolds to see the penalty.
Too late since those cars& manifolds are sold. Present 68GTO project came with new 4-tube headers. If I sold these excellent headers for the cost of manifolds, I'd go with new long-branch manifolds... unused black 4-tube headers for sale for $375...HEADMAN I think. Not the PY #113 series. Fuzzy, I too like the concept of FAST. However, keep in mind that 7500RPMs is probably wishful thinking with these engines. I read the 7500RPM converter post simply as a joke. I'm no expert, and only can relate my impressions of my research into this class of racing.
There are several very competitive Pontiac racers in there with the MoPars and Chebbys. Studying Jim Hand's combo will be a good start, however I think the FAST guys take some liberties with "Stock Sounding Cam". Jim seems to take an approach of "fastest with best manners on the street." FAST cars seem to make no concession to being well mannered on the street.. they're built to do one thing only. ____________________________________ "Gee, what's that goat doing way up here in a cloud?" -Gary Larson TO THE MILITARY FORCES CURRENTLY ACTIVE, AND THOSE THAT HAVE SERVED; THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE FOR FREEDOM. Dan's T-37 coupe made it into the 11.70's in the FAST series at 2001 meet. Believe he is now sciencing out a '70 LS6 Chevelle for this Summer's series of races. Hope the Glasco's can give him a run for the money
Requirements for F.A.S.T. series: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9486 My hats off to these fellows. While I'd like to play with the big boys, would be happy to see my GT-37 make a PureStock event in the next few years. [This message was edited by ol' Pinion head on February 14, 2003 at 09:38 AM.]

Jim and Brian are on to something. You could also use less stall, maybe 6,000 but get the "tight" 3" converter and use a 8.10 gear ratio with a 12" tall tire.
Seriously though, remember the COPO clone '69 Camaro in Hot Rod a few months ago? It was specifically built for the FAST class and it ran mid-low 11's on bias tires and exhaust manifolds. I recall it had lot's of cam (.700+ lift, 270' ish duration) and lot's of cubes and compression. Even considering the stock exhaust manifolds, it would not surprise me if the Camaro was shifting at 7,000+ RPM. These guys are basically building comp motors and making them look stock. Mike Noun did a similar thing with his '69 Firebird with the exception of headers and aftermarket heads. His car would not meet the rules but it did look pretty much stock. He ran 11.70's on M&H tires. I believe his shift points with the 455 in this configuration were 5,800 RPM. http://www.wauknet.com/douthitt/mike's.htm Tempest455 http://www.wauknet.com/douthitt/
