this a 455, it had been decked and has edelbrock heads on it. this is a performer intake.
when we went to put the intake manifold on it would not bolt up. the bolt holes were off by a very small amount. is it okay just to use a dremel to enlarge the holes or does teh intake have to be machined down

I seen this happen, and I dont see a problem with using a dremel or a slightly larger bit to open, as long as it's a minimal clearence issue.

Seems to be normal with the edel intakes. I just put on a performer RPM and the bolt holes had to be elongated just a bit, and the pads on top of the runners needed to be "reduced" just a bit so the valve covers would clear them. There are several posts in the archives about this so I knew to check for these issues going in. Sure enough, both were a minor problem.
Some have had to have the intake milled since their alignment issue was really bad. |

Don“t forget the long tiny bolt that pulls the intake to the timing cover, with the coolant seal between.
Intake and timing cover should have metal to metal contact before you torque the manifold to the heads. |

Billy177, I would try the intake with out the gaskets,and see if it lines up. If it does the mill the intake the thickness of the gaskets you are using...

Exactly what 76/80 said.Check the port alignment on the intake with a gasket, then to the head. If the ports and the bolt holes line up on the intake then slotting the holes will let it bolt up but the ports won;t be aligned. Most of the Edelbrocks I've used recently have had ti have 0.040-0.080 milled off to fit.
I do hope since you mentioned Edelbrock Heads that it is a Performer RPM intake.The plain Performer would reduce the flow on an E head signifigantly.

it actually is the regular performer. i looked up dyno charts and the performer rpm seems to make around 10-15hp mpre after around 3000rpm and the regular performer maked around10-15more below that rpm

I had to have my intake milled the thickness of the gasket in order for it to work. The first intake was so off that I sent it back to Edlebrock. They kept it for about a month, and not only sent me a new one, but sent me 2 of them!!

I would check port alignment first.
Question: Why cut an intake to make the bolt holes line up if the ports line up? |

the port alignment looked good, i could see all the bolt holes in the head they were just off center so that they would not thread in properly

Also remember that depending on the gasket, the intake will pull even lower on tightening. |

I'll still bet the Performer will be a "restrictor" for those heads. I did that with an HO intake on E heads for awhile.The plain Performer made more on plain iron heads. Even the ported iron head guys like the RPM better, and most of them are barely where an out of the box E head flows.You won't even notice the bottom end difference.

will consider the perfromer rpm then.
the current setup includes 462ci XE274h HS 1.5RR E-Heads 750 performer carb performer Intake scat rods forged pistons 3.08 rear end Muncie 4spd

With that cam and the heads the Performer will definitely be out of air for what the motor wants.

at what rpm, i don't think this thing will ever see the high side of 5000rpm

I'll bet if you dynoed it peak HP would be 5500-5800.There have been some posts on air flow on different manifolds. The Performer is going to drop the % of the head flow signifigantly more than the RPM on a high flowing E head.Probably down to 90% of the head flow as the cfm increases at higher lifts. Kind of like the Circle Track classes that have to run a 390 cfm carb or a restrictor plate to limit the airflow in.Torker II or an RPM have alot less loss %.
A stock or mildly ported iron head yes the difference is not as great. Jim Hand I believe has been running a RPM since he started runing ported iron heads.
