What is the difference between a 65-70 rear end and the newer style? Can the 1971 and up be modified to work for an earlier application?

Short answers: Alot. No.

Longer answers: Later rear is a 10 bolt c-clip rear. Earlier is a 12 bolt flanged retainer axle. Only '65-70 rears will interchange parts. '71-76 for the later rears.

Sorry.

Lots of prior posts on this subject if you are looking for more detail.
