What cam do I want to use for a 389 HO.
The engine now has a very radical cam and it's too much for street use. I believe it's a 067 CAm? ------------------ |

I don't recall such an engine as a 389 HO, but someone please correct me if I'm mistaken. The 389 tripower with manual trans produced the most HP - but wasn't an "HO" engine.
The 067 cam was the standard pontiac stock cam for 389s with 2bbl carbs, at least in 65 and 66 - maybe other years. Ponchos equipped with the carter afb got the 068 cam - not sure which cam the GTOs received. If the 067 seems too radical, you may want to do a complete tune and inspect the carb. The 067 cam is the mildest around for a 389, and should have a super smooth idle. Hope this helps, Scott |

Actually, a widely used cam in Pontiac tri-power engines ('57 - '62) was the 524886 which was the basis of the 348 HP tripower 389 engines. It's a "little more" cam than the 067, but was quite mild and very streetable by today's standards. A suitable aftermarket cam would be the Wolverine/Summit cam 214/224 - .442/.465 which should give a good performance yet docile street set-up.

Having rebuilt several tri-power cars. The cam specs call for the 068 cam. Pontiac used this cam in the tri-powers and Ho cars up to 72. Everyone that has used it in their
rebuilds have been very happy. If you have more questions just drop me a line. ------------------ Mr. Z

Ditto, the 068 (S) cam was used in '65-'66 tri-powers. It is not a radical cam. If you are having trouble with the 067, there is either something else wrong, or your cam is not an 067.
