I recently had a problem with my motor idling with almost 45 degrees of timing, but idled and started fine.
So here is what I did to find out what the hell I did:
1)Pulled cover, pulled chain and re-degreed cam to make sure that wasn't the problem. (Just installed new cam and heads and did not degree it the first time.)
2) Pulled ditributor (unilite) and found the wieghts were set for 24 degrees for the mechanical advance. I reset that back to 16. I decided on that because I figured my cam (.262/[email protected]) would probably need 18-20 degree initial timing to run/idle if not a little more.

Well when I restarted the motor this is what I now have. At 1000-1100 rpm idle, the initial timing ended up being around 24 degrees, Rev it to 3000+ and it tops out at 36 even.
The only thing I can figure is that the distributor is already slinging the weights out at the idle rpm. If I play around and try and drop the timing back, it starts to kill the engine from where its set now, it starts fine and idles great.
Does this scenario sound right,normal???

PDude I am the one Dave Holmberg told you about last week.
Thank,
Rob

How does one "ease my mine"?

Your car should run with 10-12 degress intial no problem. What springs do you have in the distributor? Did you recurve it?

You ease it by not hitting the wrong key on the keyboard!!!! proof reading also helps to.
The distributor has not been recurved.
My Comp 305 hyd cam needed 16 degrees to idle clean. It was a single pattern grind with [email protected].
My buddy, who runs mopars , says he runs about 18-20 at idle with a cam similar in grind to the one I have now.

It sounds fine to me. Your big cam is bleeding off cylinder pressure at low rpm which neccesitates more ignition advance.
