I have a 68 GTO with a 4 speed and air shocks. When I bought the car it had mis-matched tires and rims on it. The rear has aluminum slots with 295/50 15"s and the front has 225/70 14"s on rally 2 rims. The speedometer speed is all screwed up like this.
I want to remove the air shocks and put regular shocks back on with tires that fit under the wheel wells. The rubber was bad on the tires so I put 4 225/60 R15's on the goat for the time being. The problem is that the front tires bottom out and scrape all the time. What 15" tires will fit in the rear with no problems ? What 15" tire will fit on the front without giving me problems? Also, what speedo gear do I need to put in the transmission to correct for the tire size change? I have a couple of rally 2 15" that I can put on the rear for the time being until I can find some good ones, so what size tires? Should I try to find 2 more 14" rims or just go with all 15" rims? Has anyone got a couple of 14" rims complete for sale? Thanks for the help and info, Neil in Tenn ------------------ 68 GTO and 78 Corvette

Neil,
I went with 235/70-15 all the way around on my 68. If I were to do it again, I would go down to 225/70-15 on the front, since the 235s rub. You can go bigger on the back, as long as you don't go deeper than a 4-1/2" backset. I definitely like the 15s over the 14s. I think they handle better and look better. For these older cars, anything larger than 15s or a profile shorter than a 60 series tire makes them look like a resto-mod rather than a restored car. Just my .02, hope it helps you out. Kurt |

I have a 69 GTO with 225-60R-15's on the front and 245-60R-15's on the back. The combo has worked well for me for years. I have them on original 15" Rally II rims I got off an old Catalina back in the early 80's.

I have 68 GTO with 275-60-15's on the back and 225-60-15's up front. I have read where 235-60-15 would fit up front, so I went one step below. I have no trouble with tires rubbing, however, I have rebuilt that front suspension with new springs, bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends.
