Do those nice thick aluminum covers with teh preload bolts on the bearing caps really help or placebo effect and they still break?

I think they work. I've had it on my 12 bolt for 6 to 7 years. I use PRO gears. I haven't broken a set yet. I did break 2 sets of street gears with it though.

They help in a car that lunches hard and is heavy. This cover does not leak forever like the crappy chrome covers.

Absolutely Skip, they work if they are properly installed. I am running one on a car that runs 5.80's in the 8th 1.38 60ft times with set of street gears and a 4 speed. Many, many launches later and they are still in there.

yes, they do work from my experience also. 9.60s in the 1/4 and 6.0s in the 1/8 at 3500lbs, with the stock carrier caps and bolts. i run the support brace system, which is connected to the cover that extends to the end of the axle tubes also.

there is one intelligent fella, he, he, that says this is taboo tho. don't think he has any experience, other than keyboard racing tho.......

I was wondering the same thing about these covers. Hoping they worked, I ordered the Moser one from Summit last week for my 12 bolt. Any idea if the Moser is any better or the same as the Summit or Jegs knock off that is about $30 cheaper?

They work. I like to see them used however with the aftermarket billet bearing caps so the support screw has a flat surface to act against. When the cover is used with a stock bearing cap it presses against an uneven (cast)surface which can cause stress.

Thanks guys, have a 12 bolt with a spool and 33 splines going into a project car. Before I bolt in have been rethinking using one. Hopefully will be a low 10 second footbrake car.

Exactly what Wade said. Strange makes a very nice billet cap that has a nice flat surface for the bolt to press against.

Looks like I'm ordering some billet caps.
