Did the GTO's use these at all. Did PMD stamp the numbers in them somewhere? Does anyone know what the numbers are/should be?

I believe that the dual snorkel air cleaners were used on the GTOs from 69 thru 72. I don't think there is a specific number on them that designates the year of use, but I may be mistaken on that. The air cleaners were painted on the base with a chrome lid. Hope this helps

there might also be a difference with the carb bowl vent.

i think, in 71??, the q-jets had some funky smokestack looking vent that, when the air cleaner was mounted, protruded into the middle of the filter element through the base.

71 and up had a painted lid. My dual snorkle has no number that I can find. Covered with paint maybe?

I've got what I believe to be a stock, original paint dual snorkel for a 1971 in my garage (still have painted date on the inside 8-25-70). It has the hole that "costs too much" mentioned. It does not have a part number on it anywhere that I can see. Again, I believe that it still has the factory black paint so nothing should be covered up.

may be wrong on this ,but I think the hole was to vent the float bowl, something to do with emissions on california sold vehicles?. kind of confused here cuz I have a calif. built but nevada sold gto that has the hole in the base but no vent on carb. carb is orig. But air cleaner may not be ?

Also I believe the snorkles on the '69 models were placed closer together than the '70-'72 models. I looked mine over top to bottom and can't find any codes or dates on it. Maybe it was faintly stamped and the paint has covered it. Rick

I don't think GM stamped any numbers on the air cleaner housings or covers. As I remember they put stickers on the covers with the engine type and size and on the side of the lower housing with the part numbers. So many GM's had dual snorkle in the late 60's and early 70's that there should be a lot of them around. I'm amaized that more are not on Ebay. Buick, Cadi' and Olds put them on their big motors on a lot of applications, Chevy put a lot of them on too.

SLASH.. I do remember that big bowl vent on the carbs in the early '70's. Rochester put a goofy gadget on the bowl to seal out the evaporative emmisions and those carbs did,nt have the 5/16 tube like all the rest. As I remember it was some kind of a spring loaded check valve with a cover that screwed on in front of the primary choke housing.

The '69 air cleaner snorkels are less than 90 degrees apart and have no vent hole drilled, while '70 and later used 90 degree spaced snorkels and drilled bases for vent hole. Not sure if '70 had this hole, '71 did for sure. The '71 units also had a black lid, not chrome. All had ink stamped dates inside, but very few survived. Occasionally, I'll find one in readable condition.

nice info jeg, how about those chrome lids. I dont think the repop looks as the original. desgn for the outer lip or something not quite the same? I have an extra one of these & it is in about the sameshape as my original (scratches & a few very light pits) has anybody had these rechromed & if so, how did it turn out & @ what $$ costs $$. maybe, a bunch of us could get our lids togeather, and send them in for bulk rechrome

the olds one i have is from a 66/7 toronado and is entirely different than the pontiacs i have.

Checked my air cleaner, but no part numbers as far as I can see. The snorkels are spaced at slightly more than 90 degrees, so I guess it is probably not the original part?

The 90 degree was an "eyeball' measurement, maybe slightly more[?] I'm not 100% sure. I can check mine. The repro lids are off a little, as well. Close, but no cigar. I have an excellent rechromer, just sent some '71 grills and another shifter handle today. When I pick them up, I'll quiz him on bulk rate on lids. Need to have good cores to get good end results,though.

Had another look at my air cleaner. I reckon the snorkels are about 105 degrees apart. certainly more than 90, and less than 120!

I'll try to get pix of the '69 next to a '71 later today. Still a novice at this, my son handles the camera work, but I guess it's time I learned. Bear with me, please, and I'll do what I can.
