I have a 68 Hurst duelgate shifter in my lemans. The cable is a normal 69 GTO floor shift cable.
The bracket is some piece if ***** after market thing. I pulled it back into first tonight ( on my way to a cruise in ) and it was stuck there. I had a friend jack up the side of the car and help move the linkage while I was on the brakes. The shifter will still hardly move now. No park very hard to get in reverse. I had to run a jumper to by-pass the neutral switch Roll Eyes What might be screwed ? anyone else have this happen. could any one post a pic of the right bracket & cable? Any help would be great. Thanks Patrick

My money is on the cable being bad.
Several reasons why this happens, age is among them. Have seen some shifter cables go bad in cars with inadequate or improper electrical grounds. The shifter cable will take over this "chore" if conditions demand it. When this happens the cable does'nt last long after that. |

Thanks chief,
Do you have an idea many grounds would be on a 71'? Would you know if a dual gate shifter and normal GTO floor shifter would use the same cable?

Lethal several years ago I converted my 68 to the duel gate using both the 67 duel gate and 69 shifter cable(couldn't locate a 68 duel gate shifter cable).I eventually discovered that the 68 cable was shorter than both the 67 and 69(the threws were longer).I used an aftermarket adjustable cable until I found the correct cable.

As far as grounds go,I've seen many cars use 3 seperate grounds for the engine. And that seems to be an average number.Thru the years though many tend to "loose" one or two while being serviced by those that dont attribute much to proper grounding's importance.
I will have defer the specific cable questions to others with more experience on those.I was lead to believe the dual gates used the OE application cables. Not sure about the brackets either. I just wanted to give a heads up to watch out for that if indeed the cable ends up being the culprit. It is one of those things that can be overlooked pretty easily. |

I checked out the car for grounds. I found the flat ground strap from the block to the body. The negative Batt. cable to the head. Thats all I found.
I remember on a couple of nova's I had there was a wire from the ground batt. cable to the body. Would that be on a Pontiac too? Should I run one even if it is not required? Thanks Patrick

You can NEVER have too good of a ground IMO.
I would add one from the neg. battery terminal/cable to the body, another from the engine to the frame, and another from the engine to the body. And make sure they all get actual metal to metal contact, paint will inhibit good conductivity. Have you figured out whats causing your binding issue yet? |

I didn't take it all apart yet. My new cable will be here tomorrow. I know the one that was on the car was getting a little beat looking. and the boot was ripped. So even if it turns out to be something different I wanted a cable anyway. It had been 90 & humid all week here so I really was in no rush to check it all out.
I'll install the new grounds too this week. I'll post what I find out as soon as I know what the problem was. Thanks for your help Patrick

I am having almost the identical problem, All I did was remove the cable and the mounting clip from the bottom of the trans to install a new pan. The shifting has been aweful every since. I have pulled off the cable 10 times to check for binding or twisting. I was stumped. I just got my new cable (67) also, I would love to hear about your install.

Why is that?
I have studied the cable, and I can see how over time it will stretch, I am a little stumped as to why it can become so stiff in just a short amount of time.

Just got my new shift cable for the lemans.
I took off the old one, I can't move it at all it's froze up solid. I put the new one on and it shifts now. So I'm taking a little break then going out to adjust the cable. I got a new cable for 27 bucks the other one I found was on ebay for $124.00 The one I just got is better than the factory GM cable. it has new boot at the trans end that has a retainer on it. The cable also has a new floor seal boot that works way better than the press-in on I had. I'll post the part # later for anyone else that may want or need one. Patrick

For anyone that may need a cable I got mine at Napa part # 620-2302
This was the best thing I could have done. It shifts so smooth and easy now.

lethal, it is possible for the shifter cable to weld itself together if it is (unknowingly) being used as a ground cable between engine/trans and body. I suggest you carefully check the connections on ALL ground cables and straps on the car.
Im happy to hear it was an easy and cheap fix (8-)
