Have a 1968 400 YE, 2 BBL Carb. Plan on installing a 4 BBL manifold. Performed an external oil pressure test, 20 lb's at idol, 43'slb at 1500 RPM. Compression test was 175 lb's all cylinders. Problem is excessive rocker arm noise. What would be the easiest way to stop this excessive noise? Adjustable roller rockers or ????? Thanks

Could be a collapsed lifter or two or worn cam lobes. Have you removed the valve cover to check and see exactly which rockers are loose? Check to make sure the rocker arm nuts are properly tightened. Adjustable rocker nuts or rockers could cure your noise problem but they won't correct the cause if it is a bad lifter or bad camshaft.

If it has high mileage the cam and lifters are probable just plain worn out. I had a 326 where the lifters had worn through on the bottom.

Replace the Bottleneck Rocker studs that have "grooves" cut in from wear. Pull-out by successive rocker-nut tighten of a cylinder (11/16 socket) and shims to drift stud out.

"Press-in" new stud carefully, as if starting a dull nail into hardwood. That's what I did.

OR add Roller rockers.

The motor has 74K on it, wasn't driven a whole lot, just in the summer months mostly. The former owner was 80 years young. I pulled the value covers everthing is tight, adjusted down, and oiling. Runs ok,except it seems like it could run a little smoother. Recent tune up preformed, wires, plugs ,cap, ect. Timing is at 8 degrees, dwell I believe was 32. Yes it is completly stock.

Could also be a guide/seat issue.
I have seen seats wear because they are not hardened for today gas and the heat works it's way up the valve and cause guide wear. The ticking could be that. Or if it sat. Just lifters that are worn inside with oil contamination build up. Without a tear down your options are limited.

Then there is the ole Tranny fluid gimic.
