I have been swapping the interior from my 1980 Esprit to my 1979 TA. Well, lets just say that the '79 is an electricians nightmare. There are so many cut wires and what not under the dash that it isn't even funny.
Here is my dilemma......the gas gauge was working fine. I had to unhook the wiring so that I could pull the gauges out again as I was trying to see if I could replace the printed circuit gauge with that of the other car. Anyway, that did not work so I put everything back together the way it was. I did not hook up any other electrical the rest of the day. That night, I turn the car on to make sure everything is operational and the fuel gauge indicator flies up past the F and barriers itself on the right hand side. I unhook the wires (2 of them) and connect the wires to the opposites they were just attached to. Still not working. What could have done this? Is there a short?Second, I had to cut the dome light wires and use the bezel and such from the other car. Everything went in fine and dandy. I spliced the wires and connected them etc. I plug the battery back in yesterday evening and the dome light is constantly on. Checked the switch; it is off. There were two wires connecting this as well. Could the wires simply be backwards? Somehow, I doubt it since they are both the same color and were connected as one wire side by side. Could it be that it is connected to a constant power source? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

I changed the dash in my car last winter and it could be as simple as a bad ground which I had the same thing was happing to me as to the dome light are the doors closed is the switch in the dash off (not trying to be a smart ass)if so maybe a crossed wirer.
If you are not going to use the steering colum in the 80 bird (they are diffrent from a 79) would you be interested in getting rid of it

I was looking through the Haynes manual for the ground wires and that will definitely be one of the first things I check. There are grounds on the back of the gauges too and since the printed gauge circuit is not in good shape, that could be causing it too.
The doors are shut and the switch is off for the dome light so I will try rewiring it and see. As far as the steering column, I don't beleive that we will be needing it. I was tempted to put it in the 1979 since it has tilt. I figured that if it does not fit, I will sell it. Any part from the car that is not going to be used will be sold. I have to make up a complete list later once I am completly done. We are going to try and list it locally first though to avoid shipping and then I will post on here about other parts! I'll definitely let you know about the steering column. The column is still in the car and here is a complete picture of the interior and column how it was in the 1980. |

Well, the dome light was a ground which is grounded to the printed guage circuit and the light switch. It works now. I think the fuel gauge will not work because it is not he original and someone had "mickey moused" it to work and/or because the printed guage circuit has pretty much had it.
My new problem now is that the power windows don't work. If it is not one thing, it is another!

I was curious about the statment saying the '79 and '80 columns were different. I need to replace my column in my '80 T/A and I was going to use one out of a '79 Formula as it looks the same. Thanks.

As I said they are different there are a few things like the high/low beam switch is on the column for a 80/81 and on the floor for others which will make the wiring different. I am not sure if all that can be swapped that easily.Maybe someone could help out here.

Good luck.I just took my whole dash assy. out so I can do some sandblasting and stripping.
Man, there are a bunch of wires under there... http://motorhead.iwarp.com In a big operation you have to expect a few screw ups.

Word on the street is that 78 was the last year of the floor mount dimmer.
