There is a 0.045 cruched thickness gasket for the Pontiac. It is the ROL high performance gasket(HG31320HT). Although I have ready good things about them from Cheby magazine build ups, there seem to be problems with the Pontiac.
I tried them on my .034 over 455 and the problem I ran into was the fact that when looking at the gasket wiht the silicone beading facing up, the second hole from the right is actually too small. When crushed the steel ring crushes smaller than the bore. I found out because I tried to use them for the precise reason that i wanted a .045 crush gasket. I installed the first set and had water filling cylinder 4. This was on a brand new rebuild. I tore it down, cleaned and tried a second set of the same gaskets. Same problem. I then took the heads and had them throughly checked for straightness and cracks. They turned out to be fine. It was then when I fully examined the gaskets that I saw the problem. I rebuilt with fel-pro and haven't had a problem. The reason I wanted a .045 gasket was because I had a couple of pistons sticking out of the hole by .002. Now with the .039 felpro the clearance is reduced to .037 on those cylinders, but doesn't seem to be a problem. Anyway sorry about the long post. Just wanted to give you the heads up on the ROL gaskets I tried. Jim Butler offers .045 crushed thickness gaskets: http://www.jbp-pontiac.com/products/.../jbp_head.html |
