Converted from warning lights to rally gauges on 72 Lemans. Temp works fine. Oil goes to max when keys turned on. Does the same thing whether wire is hooked to sender or not. Any ideas?

I just completed this conversion on my 68. Two wires need to be switched at the main plug that hooks to the rear of the gauge cluster. Wires #5 (Tan) & #7 (Brown). Did you complete this modification?

Yes, changed the two wires and installed new sending units.

According to H.I.S. the 72 swap takes more effort than that. here is a link to the post with a 70 wiring diagram, and H.I.S. added info on the different years and specific wires to change below it for a 72. Hope this helps.

428GTO70, What I failed to mention is that the car was built in late 71 and did not have seatbelt warning light. I put a set of gages from a 71 in so I don't think the wiring is the problem but I'm not sure. I posted a new post hoping that H.I.S. would see it. Thanks for helping

Are the gauges grounded and in yet or just plugged in and hanging? The housing for the gauges has to be grounded for the gauges to work correctly. Just a thought because I have my gauges just hanging now and I have to push them against some metal to check my gas level and the other gauges.

They are in the dash which is sitting in place but not bolted in yet. I was thinking that if the ground were the problem the temp gage wouldn't work either. Maybe I should bolt in the dash?

If the dash isnt bolted in then the ground may be the whole problem, worth a try.

I guess the next thing I would check is the oil pressure sending unit and the wire. You did get a sending unit for gauges? Did the old oil light work? Also I think its the wiper switch bracket that attaches to and grounds the gauges to the dash, is that making a good connection to get your ground on the back of the gauges an the dash?(since the gauges themselves only bolt to plastic)

Yes put in a new rally gage sender from PY. Wiper bracket is securely in place with all the screws and bolts. Not sure if idiot light worked because some of the bulbs were missing when I got car.

Hmmm, youve got a stumper . You didnt happen to use tape on the threads of the sending unit? this could block the ground signal to that. I would start checking the wire for breaks with a circuit tester and if that checks out I would start suspecting the gauge itself. Im not sure how you can go about testing the gauge, im assuming that if you were to ground the brown wire it should make the gauge do something. Another thing maybe if you crimped a new end on the wire maybe the connector got crimped onto the wire shielding and not the wire itslef, that happens sometimes. Not sure what esle to try though, hopefully you get it figured out.

I was just thinking if I took a new wire and plugged one end into connector that goes into gages and the other end to the sender would the gage work if the wire were the problem or am I missing something. PS Thanks for the interest

Yeah, that should work. If you dont figure it out, I can go check out mine tomorrow and see how it acts under certain conditions, such as not grounded, switch disconnected etc. Its all apart so it would be easy.

take the wire for the sending unit and ground it out quickly taping it to a good ground, have someone look at the gauge and see if it jumps the other way, if so then it`s the sending unit, if it does`nt move then there is a problem with the gauge or the printed circuit or the plug at the back of the gauge pod, you can trace the connection on the mylar p/c and see if there are any breaks, normally the gauge should not show peak unless it is grounded out(shorted to ground somewhere) to the sending unit,if it is showing max when key is turned on it sounds like it`s grounded out, normally the gauge has 12 volts supplied to it and the gauge reacts to the amount of ground allowed by the sending unit( variable resister)

I'll try it. I think I have the mechanic from my work talked into coming over this afternoon to try to figure it out. I'll post what he finds out.

Ran a different wire from gage to sender and everything worked fine. Something wrong with original wire. Thanks you guys for your help.
