Ok, I am now looking at only these two cams, or tweaking numbers around them in a custom grind.
If you have one of these cams in a 400, 9:1, or 10:1 Compression, e-heads, I would like to hear your experience. 276 is stronger on bottom, 288 get advantage after 3500rpm. If I stroke my 400 out make it a big boy, then now question..288
If you have the 276, do you wish you had more?
If you have the 288, is it comfortably streetable.
When I win the lottery, I will build around both, but have to choose one for now.

Pick a cam for your current combination.

I have the 288 in a 9.52 cr 400 the engine made 462hp & 472tq at less than 5900rpm on KRE's dyno.We had about 10in. of vacuum @ 850 rpm and 14in. @ 1200rpm. Streetable ? I guess that is a matter of opinion. I think that this engine is streetable with the right trans/car combination. We(the Herdsclan and maybe 76 T/A) will be running the car ,65 GTO this Saturday at Milan Dragway for the first Royal Pontiac race of the season. This is also the first time this engine has been raced. If you would like more information on the engine combination let me know and will be glad to post/e-mail it to you. Tom

Herdsman,

Will you post your results after racing? I would be very interested as well in seeing how your combo works. Good luck and have fun!

72Red,
I suggest you call up Dave Bishop over at SD Performance. I was going to go with the 288HR Comp cam, but after talking to Dave he convinced me to go with a 'new' grind Dave came up with that was custom ground by Comp Cams that is very similar to the 288HR but doesn't use the Extreme Energy lobes(uses the Magnum lobes). Specs are 236/244 @ .050 w/ .580/600 gross lift. 112 LSA.
On a 469 w/ 87cc E-heads, the cam dynoed at 553 HP/597 Torque @ 5400 RPMs; 544 TOrque at 3,000 RPMS; Now, the corrected figures are 560.6 HP/606 Torque @ 5400 RPMs. Motor idles at 800 RPM's, has very good vacume and has a quite a grunt to it! Out of all the cams that Dave's experimented with, he thinks this is the best one yet. Needless to say he's really excited about it and so am I. Give him a call! -Chris

P.S. Hydraulic Lifters are on backorder currently and no one truly knows when they will arrive, so be aware.

I have used the 276HR on a 455 using 1.65 crane roller rockers to get more lift...and it idles very well in a 462...and makes tons of HP.

I have used the 276HR in a 400 using the Comp Cams 1.52 ratio arms and it also idles very well. And makes good torque and HP.

I have used the 264HR with 1.65 rockers and it will also work fine in either 400/455.

I have no experience with the 288HR...but felt it would indeed make more power...but streetable?? with power brakes?? I didn't want to have to remove it, so I wimped out and went with the 276HR

I highly recommend Comp Cams in either case.

I would go with the 276 if the car is full wieght and geared above 4.11.
It's my experiance that heavy street cars go faster and have better ETs with less than 500 lift and 240 duration @ 50.
With proper tunning your car could drive a couple of hours to the track, then turn mid to high 12s in the quarter, on the same street tires, or put on the slicks and run 11s.
Thats what I would call a street strip car.
Bigger is just bigger not faster.

can the 276hr go that fast in a 400 with the right combo? or you talking about a 455? been looking and thinking about both cams and curious to how others worked. Ive got a comp 274 with 670 heads now and was thinking of the 288hr with e heads when i get some money. curious as to how well both work.

The 274 cam can run in the 11's with problem so the 276hr cam should be able to
