The threaded post connection on my alternator became loose on the inside and it stopped working. What could have caused this?

The threaded post connection on my alternator became loose on the inside and it stopped working. What could have caused this?

I opened up the case and the weld was broken and there was spark marks around the weld. It looks like a new alternator is in order. This one lasted a year and less than a thousand miles. Oh well.

Sounds like a good excuse for buying the fancy chrome one from Summit.
