I took the cap off my MSD distributor and this is what it looked like. Anyone ever had this before and what can I use to safely clean it out? My engine hasn't run any different. Thanks for any info.

My MSD looked very similar. I had an ingition problem that turned out to the the coil. However, I did replace the pick up and sanded the "fins" down the best that I could. I spoke to MSD about this at O'Reily's Summer Nationals and they said this would happen over time due to the high voltage.

i have to park my car outside and have notice this too. I regularly have to clean it. What i did on mine that has seemed to work well, i took the distributor apart cleaned the corroded areas and masked them and painted them with zinc spray paint. The paint hasnt effected the performance that i know of. It has stopped the corrossion. Now if i could only find a way to keep the distributor cap from corroding. I have to clean the cap about every few weeks.

I have heard that the high voltage will create ozone (I was told that that is what causes the corrosion) inside the cap and that drill some small holes will help get rid of it. I dont know if it is true though

Mine had exactly the same problem, except mine had more of that white power which is over yours all through mine. It looked to me like the same crud you would find on the positive terminal of a battery over time.

I always disconnected my battery. After I pulled the distributor to pieces to clean. I stopped switching my battery off, left the cap as it was and the I never saw the corrosion again. I used 240grit wet and dry with a bit of WD40 to clean the reflucter & mag pickup.

I was told it was mixed magnetic reaction with the trigger and the battery being switched off all the time as the negative terminal bolted to the head.

Check your connectors also. Mine were covered in the white corrosion. I think the corrosion is just a nature of the beast. My pickup is a little rusty also but ohms out within tolerance. -Jim

I agree with Diamond Jim, you should replace it. Where there was once iron, there is now rust, iron oxide, so the magnetic properties have changed. Since the magnetic trigger uses a magnetic field for triggering, you could have false triggering or no triggering.

Bret- replace the pick-up and get some CLEAR Glyptol insulation paint and paint the new one. It will not affect it and will keep it from rusting. This is the same paint that armature, stators and the likes are coated with.

All it takes is a little protective paint and MSD cant do that with a 380$ product?
what am I missing here? I thought MSD was supposed to be the only quality name in ignition products. LOL My 40 yr old factory distributers look better everyday.
That must be from ozone buildup? Is that right? I wonder why other distributers dont rust? Plenty of bare metal in my points and hei's. There must be something about the atmosphere in the "ready to run" that promotes that corrosion.

BVR - You're telling me. I paid a small fortune to get this distributor over here....But.... I'm now ditching my whole MSD setup and going back to HEI. I want vacuum advance.

This is what mine looked like, pretty much same as above.
