I was wondering how many miles anyone has logged on the BOP rear main seals without any problems. I have about 2000 on my 68 without trouble. Who has the highest miles to date?

I probably have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000miles on mine. It's fine, but every other damned gasket on the motor keeps trying to leak.

I do however probably have the only BOP rear main seal that's "passed-through" a dog and lived to tell the tale.

Our Golden Retriever ate it and the cam bearings that are currently in the motor. The wife found the rear seal barfed up a couple days later, and we retrieved the cam bearings from his bed (he only really ate the box).

So are you saying the main seals on BOP's barely even last a couple thousand miles? I'm not sure I understand this. I'm new to Pontiac motors.

From what people tell me the rope seals that are produced today don't have asbestous(sp) and are prone to leak. The Vitron seal, properly installed, will last a long time possibly 100K miles or longer, I have just installed one in my 389, but have only cranked it no miles on the seal yet.

I too have about 10k miles on a 400 and not a drop has leaked yet.

Rusty - what people are saying is they don't know how long the new viton rear main seal produced by BOP Engineering (an aftermarket company) will last. They are a relatively new product and as such there aren't many people who have put a lot of miles on them yet.

The viton seal was developed because the standard rope seal that comes in the gasket kits these days sucks and is extremely difficult to install without getting a leak.

I see no reason why the BOP viton seal shouldn't last a good, long time. Hopefully the new 400 engine I'm building will hold together for the entire summer, and if it does, it'll get a lot of miles on it with a BOP seal.

WARPed answered the question in the spirit it was asked and Will summed it up pretty well. I just installed one in my brothers 400 RA III Judge, but we have not installed the engine yet. My 68 is doing fine, but does not see that many miles. I have a 389, 400 and 455 that will all be getting them over the next few months. All of these motors will be used in street cars. Two are for people who have asked me to build their engines and one is my own. I would hate to put one in a "customer's" car and have it fail in 20K. Right now it is worth the risk compared to the "rope a dope" seal that we have been stuck with. The only thing certain about the rope seal is failure.
