1972 lemans, new 455, ac... Overheating when stopped in traffic. I have a flex fan with a 3 core radiator. Just checked how close the fan is to the shroud and found that it is not centered. For example, there is about 4 inches from the fan blade to the top of the shroud, 2 inches from blade to sides, and the fan blade to bottom of the shroud is almost touching. Is this normal? If not, how can I center the fan and possibly run a larger fan?

Mine is close on the bottom too. Plenty of room on top. Check the motor mounts to see if they`re not collapsed. New ones should lift the motor some.

Yes, you should get the fan centered. But there's a lot more wrong with your setup, that you'll need to address to stop the overheating.
First, there should really only be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of clearance between the fan blades and the shroud. Anything more, and the fan isn't pulling air through the core. Second, the flex fans are garbage. Besides being too small to fit the shroud, they constantly rob power. Get yourself a factory 7-blade A/C type fan, with a heavy-duty thermal clutch. The clutch fan will only draw power when it is hot, and will close up the fan to shroud gaps to efficiently pull air through the core. My 1970 high-compression 455, with auto and A/C, NEVER overheats, since going back to the factory clutch fan. |

I've got a '72. I've never had a stock rad in it. I put in a 4 row ('73 Lemans HD cooling) with 7 blade stock fan and new HD fan clutch. I had to modify the shroud a little (not deep enuf for 4 row) Absolutely NO cooling problems. I ran it only once last year when it was over 90°F Even idling (w/o A/C) never went over 210°F. Jimbo
