Most of the ones I destroyed the teeth were stripped from the pinion......had a couple that blew the spiders.

Ive seen several of my buddies grenade 7.5's. I had an 87 Monte Carlo with factory 3.73's (7.5). I ran several 10 sec passes, and quite a few 11's, and its still going. But ive also seen them break on 13 sec passes.. I guess its the luck of the draw.... But if i could afford it, i'd buy a 12 bolt or something...

Sounds like most kersplosions are at launch on stickies. A 400 or even a high revving 350 would minimise the shock of the torque and save those poor spider gears. I think I'll get new spiders and have them cryo treated and see what happens. I'll let everyone know how it goes. This will be a 95% street 5% strip car so I think I'll be fine.. Famous last words???? Heheheh

I worked with a guy several years ago who was too cheap to upgrade. He ran a mid 70's Monza with a Buick V-6 and manual trans. He broke so many cone type posi units I lost count. Even had a few axles come out after blowing up the side gears and loosing the "C" clips off the axle(s). There are several versions of this axle around, around 1988 they upgraded to the 7.625" version, pretty sure they have larger axles? We still see enough of them blown up by whimpy SBC's to avoid them.......Cliff

455 guy, I think the stock units are destined to fail no matter what. I toasted mine with a mild 400-powered street car (at the time). Stock converter, and I never ran sticky tires, always street tires. I took off from a light one day and boom! It gave me a few signs in the weeks before it exploded, but at the time I did not recognize them for what they were. This was years ago...and granted, I was not easy on it.
I have since upgraded to an Auburn diff and Richmond 373's. Seems stronger than the original setup, but in my mind I know it is still a 7.5" 10 bolt. If it goes again I'll be looking at other options. At the time, I didn't know any better. Knowing what I know now, I'd leave the stock rear alone, drive it, and save for something stronger. Mine was good for about a year of hard driving before it coughed up some gears. Be nice to it, and it'll last longer...but what fun is that? |

Yea, I'd like to have a 9" in there but I already have the 7.5 rear and don't have the $$ to upgrade. I'll be nice to it and only beat on it when needed
 !!What were the warning signs your rear was on the way out?

If I remember correctly there were two...this was about 10 years ago...During cruising I would sometimes hear a rattle from the rear, as if there was a rock or something inside one of the drums.
The second, it only did this two or three times, but from a stop I would get a clunk upon accelerating...if I had to guess I'd say it was caused by the pinion landing on a chipped/broken tooth of the ring gear. At the time I figured the parking brake wasn't releasing. I've gained a lot of automotive knowledge and training since then, and I laugh that I never thought to pull the cover off the rear and check it out. |

Should add that NONE of the 7.5's I have destroyed were in drag cars...no sticky tires.
Did d some street racing but not with slicks, just plain street tires.

If your looking for chevy 12 bolt, find one from a 64-66, they are about 60.5 " and wouldn't have to be narrowed. Only 1" wider than yours, you could probaly get by with your wheels. I think the g-body is about 59 1/2-59 3/4" wide.

It's too bad most of us A & G body guys don't have a few more options available. In my neck of the woods there are very few GN/442 cars let alone one that's ready to cough up a rear, and even fewer 12-bolt rears. I'm not 100%, but did I read that the 12-bolt started in 65, and there were few of them. Unlike the other Pontiac models withe 8.2 and 8.5 rears, it gets costly to upgrade.

An 8.5 would most likely be plenty strong enough.

They use 10 bolts as well, but with different mounting points. And don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the 10 bolt. I'm just posting this for those who are curious about its durability. |
