I am posting this here posted one earlier in The Body Shop. I have a console and dash for a 66 GTO that needs restored and need a recommendation of where to send it. I have talked to American Classic Restoration and they seem interested, also have considered Gary's GTO Goodies and Billions & Trillions (have not read many good post here on either). While I want these items done right, I do not want to get taken to the cleaners, if you know what I mean. Any recommendations? Thanks for any help.

I would always recommend Just Dashes. They are a little pricey, but do outstanding work.

Tim.

Hi, I have used American Classic Restoration before and they do amazing work! I sent them a 70 GTO console and could not believe how amazing it looked when I got it back. The vinyl covering was perfect and looked absolutely beautiful! They even rechromed and repainted the bezel for me. I highly recommend these guys.

I second American Classic Restorations. Haven't had any work done by them yet but have seen their work and it's great. From what I've been told they have reasonable prices and without the attitude you sometimes get with other "specialists"

Thanks for all the responses. I finally sent both console and dash to Performance Restorations (us Texas boys gotta stick together) and should have them both back in 6 weeks. Will post pictures when they get back.

Thanks again
Larry

Good Luck with Performance Restorations in TX... I had a terrible experience with them this past winter. Prior to sending my dash to them, I had several phone calls with Darrell at Perf. Resto. I was promised a second to none restoration of a dash that was already in good condition. After 15+ weeks (twice as long as promised), the dash was returned with a 4in. crack that passed through one of the mounting holes, and the paint was either flaking off or had 'dripped' in several locations.

Once Perf. Resto. had my dash, my follow-up phone calls were never returned in less than a week (if at all), and in the end Darrell's response to my dissatisfaction with a cracked, paint flaking dash was that I was being "too picky". He absolutely refused to refund any of my money. I had to have the dash restored a second time to fix all the defects as received from Perf. Restorations.

Most of these guys do things in batches and groups. It makes sense and is certainly no shame. The shame is - they don't inform customers of this in advance and that creates problems. They love you when you inquire about their service in the beginning, they hate you in the end for inquiring about your parts status after they don't meet the timeline.

The first orders in the batch get the run-around and false promises while they wait and wait. The orders on the tail end of the batch get reasonable turn-around time and are happy. That's why you get mixed variations on feedback and satisfaction.

Quality suffers when customers have been repeatedly put off for weeks on end, when the batch comes in they rush these "problem customers" through the finishing process first trying to get the heat off their backs. The ones with the most heat go first and fastest, usually compromised and lacking the expected/promised finished quality. When doing restoration-whether it's a whole car or just a single piece, QUALITY is always Job #1.

When they try to turn the blame towards you - for being a pushy problem customer - or rushing them, after waiting only 2-3 unexpected months - or you're being too picky on a second to none promise - it shows they are un-qualified to be running any type of operation. It doesn't mean they can't do the work, it means they can't handle running the show. The Truth is the ONLY thing that matters, regardless of whether or not it is attractive.

This applies to almost every dash and console restoration company, but mainly it applies to the ones doing it as a "side-line" operation. The best bet is always do your own finish work or hire your own local talent. Just let these places do the plating only and get the part(s) back home - pronto.
