On my 69 GTO, the front 1.25" sway bar I bought from PY touches the idler arm. I hear a metallic noise on big bumps but otherwise, it seems okay. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a way I could gain a little more clearance?

The front sway bar should not be anywhere near the idler arm while the car is in a straight line. It may get close when you are making full lock turns. Where does the bar hit the idler?

It hits the right side (front edge) of the idler arm. Actually it only hits when I'm turning the car as I back out of my driveway which has a bump in it. The bar never hits when I'm traveling straight.

is the car lowered at all ? I think your end links may be too long.

The car isn't lowered but the front springs are original and they sag just very slightly. But the end link bolts are a tad long. They're aftermarket parts.

So the idler arm is contacting the sway bar at the end that bolts to the centerlink?
If that is the case then turn the steering full lock and look underneath to see where it contacts.
pro-tour79's reply could be correct. If the links are too long then get a different set of bolts and sleeves. If you just cut the sleeve then you may not have enough threads on your current bolt to adequately compress the bushings. Reducing the sleeve length will lower the sway bar and might give you enough clearance.

The sway bar's contacting the idler arm at the ver bottom in the front. Problem is the bar would have to be lowered about two inches to clear it.

I get it. I only read your post under general tech. I misunderstood your problem. I installed a 1-1/4 bar from a 78 or 79 trans-am and had trouble with the tierod. Sorry, I assumed that's what you meant. Your problem is with the front bushing. you have it mounted too far back. If you are trying to use the stock bolt holes, you need to grind the slots as far in towards the bushing as possible, and use socket head bolts. Note in the pic that I had to grind the washer flat on the back edge.

From the top. This is how much clearance you should have. The idler arm does not move at this end. If you are only hiting it at a bump, check for loose bolts or ovaled bolt holes where the idler attaches to the frame.
