I would like to remove my seatbacks to repaint them. Does anybody know how to remove the seatback lock button assembly to allow the seatback to be removed? Thanks.

are you referring to the one in the center of the seatback, or the one on the side to recline?
i dont think that, the recline feature, was an option on 70 and up. anyway, you dont have to remove the center back one in order to get the seatback off. that button is held in place by integral spring clips that are best accessed from behind.

SORRY... It is the push button in the top center of the back panel. I took the three operative screws out of the panel and the lock button is what's holding it up from coming off. TYhis is where I'm stuck.

The button snaps into place after the back goes on. How to get it out intact is another question. I'll see if I can get you some pictures as I've got one that is apart.
Here's a hint though, don't pry on the outer trim. It will break. I know.

suadboy, this is the description in my assembly manual on CD.
1. Remove the head restraint for seat back 2. Using a flat bladed tool, carefully snap off seat back lock button and escutcheon assembly and remove the two screws securing seat back panel to lock assembly (these are behind the push button) 3. Tilt seat back forward and remove three screws securing bottom of seat back panel to seat back frame. 4. Pull bottom of seat back panel outward and lift panel upward from upper retainers: then remove panel from seat back 5. To install seat back panel, reverse removal procedure. When snapping on seat back lock push button and escutcheon assembly, make sure assembly is installed right side up with contour of side flanges matching contour or seat back. |

Here are some pictures. The springs clip onto the sides of the mounting hole and they aren't easy to get out.
