After a V-8 transplant with a originally 4cylinder powered Toyota Celica, I hooked the HEI tach terminal to the factory tach. Works fine except that it seems to be reading double the actual RPM. Obviously, this is because it is designed for a 4 cyl. car but I'd like to keep the factory guages. Is there anything that can be done to rectify this?

I haven't a clue, but the following thoughts came to mind:

(A) disconnect half of the spark plugs???

(B) take your SBC buddies for a ride. Tell them the speed is slow because the car has a 6.37 rear gear! Ask them if their SBC will REV like your Pontiac.

The tach can probably be recalibrated/readjusted or redesigned slightly. I've done it to factory GM tachs but not to an import yet. You would have to take it out of the dash & take it to a knowledgeable tach repair business. There are several mentioned in this BB and others.

Regards, George

You can also make or buy a frequency divider circuit. I will look on some of the electronic sites tonight and see what I can find. Basically it turns the signal into digital, mathmatically divides it by 2 and then amplifys it back up.

Thanks for the thoughts. I like the idea of some kind of divider circuit a little better than disconnecting half the spark plugs lol. I thought about taking apart a cheap tach with a 4,6,8 cyl switch on it and trying to wire it into my circuit but my electrical knowledge is not as great as I wish it was. If anyone with the talent could help I'd be grateful.
