There may be better ways to to it but I will share what has worked for me. When cutting the steel braded hose I tightly wrap the area to be cut with masking tape, several layers. I then place the hose in a vise keeping the area of the cut as close as possible to the vise jaw. I then cut with a very fine tooth hack saw. The tapes does not completely eliminate fraying but does keep fraying to a minimum. I then use a bit of WD-40 on the fittings to prevent galling and it helps the fitting in the hose also. I don't like the red/blue an fittings as they scratch and show signs of wear very quickly. I like the nickel plated aluminum fittings that look like stainless but without the additional cost and weight. There is a special machine for cutting the hose but it's not cost effective to go out and buy one. Just my .02.

What about using an air cut off wheel to cut the hose, would this be better than a hacksaw.

I have always used black electrical tape around the end of the hose and not masking tape. The routine in the vise is the same but I prefer to use an air grinder or Dremel to cut the hose as this is MUCH easier on the arm and tends to fray less than with a hacksaw. Just remember to mark the hose when you slip it in the fitting to check if when you tighten the fitting the hose does not pull out of the end. I always used a pencil and traced around the end of the fitting after the hose has bottomed out in the end.

Do you mean put the tape on ONLY we cutting the hose and take it back OFF once it has been cut?

Slowbird, I sell Aeroquip hose where I work. I can send you an Aeroquip catalog with pictures and instructions on how to properly cut, assemble and install steel braided hoses. I prefer using the SS braided hose with teflon inner tube due to higher pressure, higher temperature and more chemical resistance capabilities. This is the same hose used for nitrous or brakes. It holds up much better than the rubber lined hose for trans lines or if you use alchohol for fuel. For regular fuel or oil either is fine. I have found Russel fittings fit much better than Areoquip. I have had nothing but trouble with the Areoquip fittings with their hose (smaller ID.)
The electrical tape works great. DON'T use WD-40 on rubber parts, it will attack and degrade them. [This message has been edited by 71Sport (edited 02-24-2001).] |

Use tightly wrapped tape (I use duct tape) use a fresh cut-off wheel on a die grinder & cut through the tape at desired length, unwrap tape. A little oil can be used as a lube. Be sure to flush hose out w/some carb cleaner & compressed air before use.

Ok what are the size of the hose then. I thought that a #10 was equal to a 1/2 line but the book say that #8 is 1/2. I thought #8 was for 3/8 line.

Each number is basically 1/16". So -8 would be 1/2".

After lots of experience working with the stuff on motorcycle brake & fuel lines, I can say, 1) duct tape is better than blacktape for keeping the wire down when cutting <black is punctured easier> and 2) with a really STOUT pair of scissors, you can <slightly> bevel the end of the hose for a smoother entry, after lightly lubricating with oil. Take the tape off 1st.

divide which ever number you have by 16; 6/16=3/8, 8/16=1/2, 10/16=5/8

Just a side note, all AN (Army-Navy standard)
hose/tube fittings are 37 degree flare angle and should not be used w/SAE automotive hose/tube fittings, they are 45 degree flare angle. It is also not recommended to use one manufacturers hose with another manufacturers fittings, I have personally experienced failures due to this scenerio. Good Luck, Herb
