im looking for a car to buy when i get my graduation money. my father keeps telling me that the transmissions on these cars were horrible (the same with the camaro of these years). Is this true? has anybody else had a problem?

I bought an 85 T/A four months ago. I bought it from the original owner with 115k on it. He said that the motor and transmission had been rebuilt at 113k. The car sat for a month or so due to a timing issue(thanks to all of you who helped out with that). Anyway, in the three months that it's been road worthy, I've put 10k on it. I have not had a single issue with the transmission. In ten thousand miles all I've done is replace the lower ball joints, put some Toyo Spectrums on it and got it aligned. So I guess the answer to your question is Yes, the earlier 700R4s had some issues. However, there are many variables to consider when buying a used car. My advice, get the T/A or Camaro. Just be wary of the seller and don't jump at the first thing you see.

We bought a 1991 Firebird with 80,000 miles on her, and now have over 144,000 miles on her!
We have been blessed, as no problems except for small things, like waterpump.
The early cars use to have problems, the later ones didn't with the trannies.
