Hey Guys! Wondering if any of you have put a TH350 in a '66 GTO. Can you give me any ideas or areas to look out for.

At the moment it appears the Munci 4 speed and the TH350 are approximately the same length. The current drive shave also fits into the TH350.

Thanks for the help,

Kev

Kevin, a Turbo 350 will bolt right in, the transmission is the same length as a Muncie. But why would you want a Turbo 350 instead of a Muncie 4 speed?

Hey Ken! thanks for the reply. the answer to your question is because I can't shift worth a damn! I have wanted to see what performance change will happen as well. My car has run 13.0's to 13.1 with the 4 speed. I do not power shift the car either. I am thinking it may be worth a few tenths. I am also not very consistent either. Recently I have run anywhere from a 13.30 to a 14.20 at Maple Grove. Try to dial in on that!!! LOL

The TH350 is just a racing phase (maybe not a phase) change. I will put the 4 speed back in when I get the "race only" vehicle.

Thanks for the info,
Kev

Kev, if you are contemplating a race car someday you may want to condsider a TH400 for this car. When you do go to a race-only car you can take the trans with you and the TH400 will take a lot more abuse than the TH350 will. Installation of the TH400 is not much more work, you just need a different driveshaft and since you will be racing, having a new shaft made up may not be a bad idea anyway. You can store the original driveshaft for when you restore the '66.

I would be interested to see the difference at the track. I have the same situation. Want to be consistant but don't want to give up the 4 speed. Let us know how it worked out.

Kev,
The TH350 and the Muncie should be the same length. Use try your drive shaft, and use a TH350 yoke with a 5-212X Spicer u-joint to adapt the yoke to your shaft.
You know how reliable my transmission is, in a heavy car, over 525 lbs.ft of torque, and 469 hp. I average over 650 strip passes, and 15- 20 street miles between rebuilds. Converter is no problem, either.

Kev,
The TH350 'short shaft' is 27 5/8" overall length, 20 3/8" from engine face to trans mount. It is real easy to measure your Muncie and bell housing and engine face to trans mount. The TH350 and the muncie use the same trans mount, IIRC.
