Ok, so it did or did not improve some (a little more screaming tires, I guess, being the definition)? If it did, then I say advance it another two degrees and see if that helps. I reiterate that you don't know right now if your timing marks are off.
Starting problems don't matter while its running. You can correct the initial timing and starting issues by broadening the amount of advance later, if you find that more timing is what you need to turn those tires over!

Hey Jyd, When I head the heads off I put #1 piston at T.D.C. and when I reassembled the motor and installed the damper the line was at tdc so I believe my timing marks are ok. The performance hasn't improved with advancing timing, but I will try some more advance. This car idles way to smooth for this cam. If I installed it a tooth off would it idle this smooth? Maybe I have it retarded, like me

I was just thinking we still may be able to test out the th350- if the trans is suspect. I still have the driveshaft and cross member from the 442 and it should bolt right up (?). I know the torque converter is good and the shifts are positive.
Later, Jon

Since timing doesn't seem to be helping much - what model # Edel carb? Did you use the metal adapter plate when you installed it to intake? Big vacuum leak if not. You said it's a vacuum secondary??? If it's a Performer 1407/ 1411 it's mechanical. The secondaries usually come in too quick and you can bend the rod linkage to make them open up later. Are you running full manifold vac adv or ported? Where is your pump shot set at? What jets/ rods and step-up springs are you using? For a quick test move the pump shot arm to the top hole and see if you notice a difference, then to bottom if not. Then get the calibration kit and follow the instructions. If it's not a 1407/1411 then never mind

Guys I don't have vacuum advance hooked up right now. It was pinging under load. I am going to take a manifold vacuum reading as well as a cranking compression test. I believe I have a 1411 carb, it has no bog when punched but still could be a problem, I thought it was vacuum secondaries? I will continue to advance timing as JYD has suggested. Thanks fellas
