i just bought an 81 camaro that has a pont. 400 punched 30. has edelbrock performer rpm intake and edelbrock 750 carb. The carb has been taken apart b4. I knew this cuz one of the metering rods was bent at a 90 degree angle. Also one of the floats was hanging at 2 1/2 in! I rebuilt the carb and readjusted the floats and fixed the metering rod. I turned the adjusters out 1 1/2 turns each. i thought this would cut down on the gas spitting back out the carb, but it didnt. I just cant get the thing runnin. I put a points distributor in it and set everything by the book. i know the timing has to be close but it still backfires occasionally when i try to start it. I am so stumped on this one. ill take any ideas i can get. feel free to email me at [email protected]

I had a friend that had the same problem with his Edelbrock. The problem was that the fuel pressure was too high. He was using a race pump with no regulator. Once he put a regualtor on it, and set it for 7psi, no problems.

The short answer is too much gasoline in the carburetor.

The long answer (possible causes):

(A) Defective float (if brass, test in hot water - defective will blow bubbles)
(B) Defective fuel valve(s)
(C) Too much fuel pressure (consult the manufacture for max pressure), place fuel pressure gauge at inlet to carburetor
(D) Poreous casting
(E) Float level out of adjustment
(F) Float bent, possibly rubbing on inside wall of float bowl.
(G) Foreign material (rust particles, dirt, etc.) on fuel valve surface.
(H) Defective vent on gasoline tank (causing excessive pressure).

could it be possible that the cam is 180 degrees out. the guy that built this motor dont seem to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. is it possible that he set the timing marks wrong when installing the cam?

good news everyone! the poncho runs good. the cam was 180 out. the guy that built it really didnt know what the heck he was doin! anyways, now the the starter wont disengage unless i turn the key off. But when i turn the key off the car stays runnin! i put a new starter switch under on the steering column and put a new starter and solenoid on it. I dont know where to go next. i think he has too many wires running to the starter. im not sure though. any ideas?

Does the starter have 3 wires going to it,one battery and 2 smaller?

If so are the 2 little wires hooked up to different posts?

i dont know why, but it actually has 4! 3 on the post that the batt hooks up to and one black one going to the s side of the solenoid.
also, one of those wires is spliced into the alt/coil wire. these three wires run into a small box on the pass. side mounted to the heater core cover. does this help you any?
