We did not reanodize but we did remove the anodizing and repolished the aluminium. We hand sanded the moulding with 220 grit and repolished utilizing a bench polisher and the appropriate rouge.

We are quite pleased with the way our trim turned out. you may want to try an area that is not visible or pick up a peice at a junk yard to try the process out. It is very time consuming but provided us the shine we were looking for.

I to polished the trim on my 65 hardtop but I finished it off with a coat of clear coat to keep it that way longer

I SENT MY GRIILES AND HEAD LAMP DOOR TO FINISHING TOUCH FOR AN ESTIMATE . 64 GTO POLISH AND REPAINT OVER 700.00 PLUS I FEEL THIS IS A LITTLE TO HIGH, HAD THEM SENT BACK. I'M WORKING

I just did the drip rail moldings and the moldings on the top of the door and 1/4 panel on my 65 HT.

I started sanding them and buffing them on a benchtop grinder/buffer. I accidently hit the wire wheel with the molding while buffing it (two wheels on the machine). It was a very fine wire wheel. I re-buffed it where it hit the wire wheel and it polished better and faster than the areas I had sanded.

Now I use the FINE wire wheel to remove the dull anodize finish then hit it with the black rouge and buffing wheel. With both wheels on the same machine, it went very fast. I did all the pieces on Sunday afternoon and they shine like a mirror. The more you buff the better the shine. It seems that the AL needs to get hot on the buffing wheel before it really gets bright.

I don't know how long the shine will last. A good wax job done periodically with the rest of the car should be adequate to preserve the shine.

Applying a clear finish scares me sinced I don't ever want to have to remove this molding again to redo it and I don't know how long the clear coat would last.

You can clear power coat AL, but the trim is kinda thin, and they bake power coating at about 40 to 450, I dont know what would happen to a thin
piece of trim . I have been thinking about it, im expecting some trim in the mail and maybe ill give it a shot.

I just went through this with my 65. I didn't want to pay the huge price quoted to restore to original finish. I spoke with my chrome shop, it turns out they run into this a lot with other makes on parts like grills. For $75 they chemically removed the anodize and polished everything - really nice! They recommend using those alum wheel cleaning cloths treated with alum cleaner a couple times a year. I asked about a clear coat but they did not know about adhesion on the polished surface, we agreed better if I leave as is and polish a couple times a year.

I'm no expert, but where is this AL molding on a 64/65 GTO. I am under the impression that all of my molding is stainless ?

The trim along the top of the doors and quarters at the side windows of a 65 GTO hardtop is aluminum, this same trim on a convertable is stailess. Don't ask why, I don't know!!

This Zoop's stuff is supposed to be the best for aluminum. Pricey though. Take a look.

They're correct Jim, the trim on top of the doors is aluminum. All the rest is stainless. I had mine polished and coated with plastic of some sort by a small local shop that specializes in refinishing trim. He had a source that he sent anodized pcs. too but I elected to just have them polished.

I contacted several companies that anodize and they all warned me about not being responsible for how the trim would turn out. Seems that any imperfection would be magnafied after anodizing and that the level of shine would not be the same as the origional polished aluminum. Notice in the finishingtouch.com web site under services they don't recommend reanodizing aluminum either. POR-15 has a product called Glisten PC which is supposed to be a "water clear" coating for all polished metals including chrome. It's a two part coating that cures with exposure to moisture in about three days and once cured is very tough. I tried that stuff on one part, made it cloudy like I painted it with a thinned down white paint. Fortunately I was able to remove it before it set up too well.
