64 gto, 389 4 barrel sitting in place with no front clip. I would like to start it before putting the rest of the car back together if possible. I hooked up the battery cables to the starter and the block and hooked a remote start switch to the starter to turn it over. Then I hooked a hot lead to the + side of the coil. At first I had the black wire from the distributor hooked to the - side of the coil and I wasn't getting any fuel so I replaced the fuel pump. Then while reading in the 64-70 restoration book I saw that the coil wire goes to the + side of the coil so I moved it and then when I hooked the power up to it again I smoked it. Definitely doing something wrong here and I need a few tips on what to hook where so I can start this engine. Help!

Distributor wire goes to coil (-). Power from battery goes to coil (+).

Thanks George that seems to be the consensus. My local auto parts store even has the new dist. wire. Should be able to try this again tonight.

Just thought I would complete this thread. I started the 389 this last weekend. Found out the coil was bad and once it was replaced it fired right up after sitting for 13 years. I need to fix the front seal leak (yes there is a slight groove in the dampener hub) and the rear main is leaking. I will put in a BOP seal and be done with it. It sure did sound good and strong. I only ran it for a few minutes because no cooling is hooked up yet. But it sure did give me that "all right" feeling.
