Did everyone get their new issue of carcraft today ??? Flopper built a 350 that dynoed at 627 HP. It was "only" $7500. Just think what a 400 would have done !!!

LMAO. I can't wait to get mine in tomorrow. I'm pretty sure that was a typo. Maybe 327 HP for $7500. That sounds more like the TRUTH.

Got the new Hot Rod today, it sucks, as usuall.

627 on spray. Were headers included in the price? Heads would run around $2000-2200 ported, so where'd the rest of the money come from? I guess I'll know when it arrives in the mail.

Now that Gray is dead, HotRod will slowly slide into oblivion where "cool" is concerned.

Why is that so hard to believe? I don't get it. I have several friends that have small block chevy prostreet cars. Most are pushing 500hp easy, and one guy with a Camaro is pushing 800hp.

Are Pontiac 350's that crappy? I don't buy it. I think any engine given the proper build can make horsepower to a certain point. And I believe a Pontiac 350 can also.

Back in 75 there was a guy that use to run 11's at York US30 in a Lemans, with a 350 Pontiac.

Brian, Gray was the WORST. Street rods suck. Sorry dude, couldn't ever stand his stuff. Just never got into that crap. Now that my Dad bought a 31' Ford, I am totally convinced that anyone who likes those things is out of their minds. WAY too small, ride like a Corvette with no shocks, and have WAY too much chrome to do anything with. In my opinion, since they have been trying to act like Car Craft, they have gone way down hill. They try to start too many trends instead of covering what is going on.

Nick, Chevy 350 vs Pontiac 350 = apples to oranges. No similarities.

Well you are entitled to your opinion G-man, but I take offense to that. Gray was a great guy. He is/was the epitome of California Hot Rodding. A real Hot Rod "lifer". I agree, Hot Rod wont be the same, and neither will Hot Rodding.

As for the 350, it's possible. My thoughts are, why? You have to buy the same parts, same costs, (unlike chevy BB vs SB) so why not build a 400/428/455?

How many times have you seen a 350 SBC on the cover of CC or HR boasting 600+ HP, only to read that was with a 200 shot of NOS?

Goatman, though there are difference between the chevy 350 and Pontiac 350 they are both, just like any engine an air pump. Given the proper components you can make any engine produce horsepower. True cubes rule, but I see no reason why a 350 Pontiac cannot make large horsepower, and if fact they have and can.

Take a 350 Pontiac. add 72cc Eheads, Single plane intake, 750dp, hydraulic roller. My guess is around 500hp.

I may try that with my 350 in my Firebird, just for the hell of it and report back here just to prove a point. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I use to do promotional work for Hot Rod. Met Gray at Atlanta Drag way, we both had press passes and I had no idea who this guy was, just another photographer. Real nice guy, VERY unassuming.
I have a love hate realationship with Hot Rod magizine. I do love the nostalgia articles on Hot Roddings greats, and hot rods on the cheap for poor kids who want to get started.
There second best seller of all time had a GTO Judge on the cover, just a few years ago.

I have two 350 motors for sale, one 69 short block and the other a 70 long block minus the carb. Both for $100. Just the right motors for building 600+ hp [img]tongue.gif[/img] . Located in SF, CA.

Buddy of mine has been track champion past two years in street stock class (that's circle dirt track wars) with a pontiac 350 against a bunch of chevy 350's.
Nickv, I'd park my butt in that rod any time.

Willv, I'll take those 350's if you can bring them to the PSN's.

I thought a big part of pontiac popularity for street car was the average guy with a 350 firebird or lemans could score a 455 with decent heads in the junkyard, do a basic rebuild with one of the factory high performance cams, put it in and everthing bolts up fine. He didn't spend much and now he is kicking dust on everyone with that fat torque that comes from cubic inches...... Just what I've observed.

Got my July issue today. Everyone has an opinion on this, but i must say that i am really impressed with this 350" Pontiac engine build up. Without Nitrous torque was 468 and HP was 539. With a 125hp shot of Nitrous torque was 625 and HP was 670. This was with a 750 cfm carb, they feel that an 850 cfm carb would add 35 HP. Westech had Fulper remove one cyl head so they could measure the bore and stroke etc they pronounced the engine is "legit". Well i guess i will hang onto the 350's i have.

Its funny, you want me to appreciate the "Older" stuff that Detroit put out, then Street Rod guys go and CHANGE the way the cars were! You guys make me laugh! There is nothing on those cars that is from early Detroit anymore, except for a grill here and there and a few body lines. Chopped, channeled, new motors and drivetrains, new electrical. Seems to me that the "mature" folks just want to be different. Too bad they can't figure out a way to make those things ride like cars...............

Deal with it.

Nick, the differences in bore and stroke, coupled with the Pontiac head, make the 350P a fairly tough motor to modify for high horse power applications. Anyone who has worked with Pontiacs knows this. Not saying it CAN'T be done, but more like, WHY?
