I'm converting my 72 from auto column shift to floor shift console. Is the neutral safety/ steering & shift lock linkage the same set-up as with column shift? It seems instead of the linkage moving trans shift arm (with column shift), the linkage now it just along for the ride to move collar in column to release steering lock, and give neutral safety and back up switching (with floor shift). So with some header installations, removing linkage is required, thus removing the shift-lock and making you manually turn collar to get your back-up lights to come on.

When I changed my Lemans the shifter I bought had all the switches on it. I just went to the junk yard and cut the wires out or a wreck to run from my console to the factory plugs.
I cut all the junk off of my column and had to move my proportioning valve it was tight against the headers. (I put on Doug's big tube headers) Hope this helps you

Yours is obviously older than '72.I don't know when the change was but I know '68 had switches in console. I think 69-72 was all on column because the key went from the dash to the column (steering lockout was used). 72 definately has no switches in console.

You are right I never thought about that, I have a 68 duel gate in mine.
Here are a couple of pics that might help you I scanned from my 71 service manual. Looks like you need to keep all the column stuff on to run everything. Or you could install a 68 shifter, they bolt right into a 72 console. pic 1

Looks to me like the cable goes on then the selector lever. Then the shaft & lever asm.
I don't see how your headers would ever fit past all that stuff.

Thanks for the effort, Patrick. I have a '72 service manual so I've seen all this before. There is NOT a pic however of both the column setup AND the linkage from the column together. Here's a pic from Summit's website on installing their "house" brand headers. Shows how to re-manufacture (bend) the linkage to go around the header. (both auto and manual)I didn't bother to do the text instructions... pics show a lot.

Also I think some headers are made to go under the linkage(no ground clearance) and some that say steering lock-out linkage must be removed('cause the header goes right through the middle of it).

I see what you mean. You would think the manuals would cover this better.
I am working on getting a 72 Lux Lemans, I haven't looked it over yet but if it is floor shift I will be sure to get detailed pics of the set up for you. Sorry I could not be more help to you. Patrick
