It seems like all the fast guys on here all have 455+ inch engines. All I have to work with is a 400, so I an going build it similar to a built 455 and see what I can get out of it. Here is my build up...anyone care to guess what it will do in a full weight '75 T/A with the A/C removed (3800-3900lb. raceweight):

* Stock 400 shortblock with stock pistons
* Fully ported #48 heads with 2.11/1.77 valves (255cfm @ .500" lift with excellent low and mid lift numbers)...should be about 10:1 compression
* Summit 2802 cam...224/234, .465/.488, 114lsa
* Holley Street Dominator intake
* 800cfm Q-Jet
* Hughes 4000 Stall
* 3.42 gears
* Hooker 1 5/8" headers
* 3" exhaust with X-pipe

Well, im stuck with my 400 but I think for what it has it runs pretty good. The 400 is in my 81T/A that weighs 3650 with me in it.
400, stock crank and stock lightened rods
trw pistons in backwards
16 small valve heads with ram air IV valves 2.11- 1.77 valves, heat risers filled with aluminum, ported but I don't have flow #'s
Edelbrock Rpm intake
Hydraulic comp cheater cam 256-264@ .050 .516lft
holley 750 vac. sec.
hedman 1 3/4 headers with 2.25 flowmaster exh.
stock turbo 350 trans with a 10inch transking 3800 flash converter
3:42 gears(so I can still cruise on the highway)
28x12.5 et streets in the rear
I drive my car on pump gas and Ive only had it at the track once. No adjustments were made or tuning and it ran consistent 12.30's @ 110mph with 1.85 60ft's. A friend and I just installed a set of slide a links to try and better my 60ft's. Shaker455 just built me a 840cfm mechanical secondary Holley(great guy!)to try out. Personally I would go with a bigger cam and 1 3/4 headers. I would imagine your car would pull et's more or less near mine. Would you consider trying out a performer rpm intake?

low compression...8.2-1
holley 750 vacuum secondary
edelbrock performer rpm
400 cu." .30 over 1970 block
new rod and crank bearings
RA IV cam .470/.470
96cc 4X heads w stainless 2.11/1.77 valves
comp cam springs
summit double roller timing chain
152 magnum roller tip rockers
summit lifters and push rods
balanced assembly stock rods/trw forged pistons moly rings
Summit (melling?)high volume oil pump
MSD HEI/ running without vacuum advance
cheap hooker headers into 3" pipes into 2 chamber flowmasters into 3" pipes ending at axle
torque-converter stalls around 2000rpm
t-400 trans w/ trans go shift kit
stock 342 gear posi rearend w/50 series tires
74 formula 400 with black deluxe interior
not exactly the right cam for me but not a slow car either...and very lopey and bassy...

I think you would be better off with the super comp 1 3/4" since you have a 4000 stall and fully ported #48 heads. The other thing is that the 3:42 gears seem like a missmatch. I would go 3:73s. That cam is not a real high RPM cam so the 4,000 stall I believe you will loose alot of power under the 4,000 rpm curve. You are basically setting up your car like mine. I have the same cam with 3,000 stall and 3:73s, street dominator and holley 800 dp, 1.65 roller lifter . I dont have ported heads though and I am doing 12.60seconds on a high temp track. air around 90 with track temps way higher. These opinions are just mine and you need to find out how your car goes once built. when I first built it and was doing 13.7s. Changed to an auto and gained .5 secs so 13.2 . I had a small bog with my car so I changed to a 3,000 stall from a 2200-2400 and then went with 1.65 roller rockers and an 800 DP from a 750 and went down to a 12.92. My last changes were Aluminum rims, and drive shaft and now I do 12.60.

I thought about 3.73's, but I am only running a 26" tire, so I thought the 3.42's were a better match for that. I would run a performer RPM intake, but they don't fit under the stock shaker hood. I heard the strip dominator is next in line for performance if its ported to the heads, and it fits under the shaker.

Larry Navarro sells some kind of kit that allows you to run a edelbrock rpm intake and still run a shaker. I run my shaker with a small air filter. Would you consider a bigger cam? How fast do you want to run?

I would like to run 12.30's or faster and I would really like to get as close to rollbar territory (11.99 or quicker) as I can. I know you can run an RPM with a shaker, but it ends being bolted to the hood, and I hate that. I want to keep the stock appearance. I already have the cam, and I am on a TIGHT budget, so I am stuck with this one. Given past build ups, I think it will work well. Keep in mind that this car will look stock and be able to drive anywhere...including the track.

Well, what do you run for rockers? I would try 1.65 roller rockers, 1 3/4 headers and maybe see if you can possible advance the cam a couple of degrees. Who built the q-jet? Isn't the new rule for a roll bar 11.49 and quicker?

I live in TX and run at Ennis. 11.99 or quicker requires a roll bar here. The 1 5/8 headers were free and all I have to run. The Q-Jet is being built by a friend of mine who is a local Pontiac guru and really knows what he's doing there.

Also, it sure seems like I have seen a lot of people stating that the RPM needs milled to fit. Is this always the case?

Not true anymore.

Special aircleaner assembly available here.

To run in the low 12s you're going to need more cam and a lower gear, at least a 3.73 cog to move your heavy T/A.

If the car were a few hundred pounds lighter you might get there with the 3.42s, but at best I see 12.50s. Running your current combo of parts I see no better than 12.80s.

Lighter car, more gear and more cam will get you to the 12.30s or below.

We just ran a 7.32 at 94.5 (1/8 mile) in bad air and skating all over the track with our street 400. It was dynoed at 502hp at 6500rpm and 473ftlbs at 4400rpm.
